GROWTH TARGETS

Result of WASC Self-Study 2001-2003

CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION

A1.

1.      We need to develop strategies to integrate student understanding of the connections between the curriculum, the content standards and the Eagle Expectations into the daily curriculum.

2.      We need to provide more formal opportunities for teachers to develop cross-curricular projects and units.

3.      We need to improve articulation between the high school and the middle school.

4.      We need to revise the Student Handbook to better serve students and their parents.

5.      We need to continue to expand our system of tracking students after graduation.

A2.

1.      Although eleventh graders have several opportunities to begin to plan their futures beyond high school students and parents believe and express a need for more formalized guidance..

2.      We need Improved communication between the counseling department and all stakeholders.

3.      With the help of the El Segundo Education Foundation and the ESHS technology class, we have begun to devise a process to track our students after they graduate from high school. This process needs to be expanded and maintained.

A3.

1.      More staff development time needs to be allocated for teachers to analyze student data so that curriculum can be modified where necessary to ensure the success of all students.

2.      We need to further support the needs of students who are not classified as “at risk” or “high achieving.”

3.      We need to develop a process by which we better track our students after graduation in order to determine the success of our program.

A4.

1.      We need staff development on applying various teaching strategies to meet the needs of all students, especially male students, and students who demonstrate below expected grade level performance within the classroom and on standardized tests.

2.      We need to incorporate teaching strategies that improve reading skills across the curriculum, especially in algebra, science, and language arts in order to master critical and abstract thinking skills.

3.      We need to incorporate technology more seamlessly into daily curriculum.

ASSESSMENT and ACCOUNTABILITY

B1.

  1. A formal, regular and systemic program to collect, analyze and review data in order to effect needed changes to improve student achievement. One example is that our API scores dropped changing our status from a 10/10 school in 2000-2001 to a 9/10 school in 2001-2002.  We have not analyzed this discrepancy due to lack of a formal process.

  1. To build an infrastructure with a steady commitment of resources and time for continuous assessment of student learning and for teacher collaboration.

B2.

  1. The data are not used consistently by the school community to modify programs, services, and resource allocations.

B3.

  1. We need staff development on how to use rubrics
  2. We need to receive financial information in a timely manner from the district office in order to analyze the financial resources in connection with the needs of the students.

SUPPORT for STUDENT PERSONAL AND ACADEMIC SUPPORT

C1.

1.      We need to improve the perception of the counseling program by students, parents, and teachers.

2.      We need to better communicate with the students, parents, and teachers concerning the myriad of support programs available.

3.      We need to update and expand the Career Center.

4.      We need to define a GATE program and allocate funds accordingly.

CULTURE FOCUS GROUP

D1.

1.      Teachers work in isolation in their classrooms on teaching strategies; time and resources for collaborative efforts are not in place.

2.      Campus cleanliness is a problem at El Segundo High School.

LEADERSHIP AND STAFF

E1.

1.      While we are strong in our reaction to change, we need to create mechanisms to allow us to be proactive rather than reactive in ensuring the continued development of a student-centered school.

  1. We need to create a clear communication system in which all stakeholders are involved.  For example, information needs to be disseminated in a timely manner so that the parents and community members are aware of events and can be part of the decision making process.
  2. Organizing and formalizing the larger programs well in advance will assist the staff and leadership in providing a continually evolving number of services to best meet the needs of students, parents and community members.

E2.

  1. We need our administration to be more present in the classroom throughout the school year and beyond the scheduled times for the evaluation process.
  2. We need staff development time for teachers to observe each other and collaborate both within their departments and interdepartmentally.

E3.

  1. We need to formally establish the Site Staff Development Committee which will be responsible for formalizing our vision for staff development and creating and implementing an ongoing comprehensive staff development plan.

E4.

1.      While El Segundo High School is integral to the surrounding community, we need to expand the involvement of parents and community members in supporting the academic achievement of all students.

VISION AND PURPOSE

FI.

1.      Educators need workshops and more collaboration time to disseminate current research-based knowledge about teaching and learning as it relates to the standards, the Eagle Expectations, and our critical academic needs.

2.      Students need to understand the connections between the standards and Eagle Expectations and their daily classroom work.
