W.A.S.C. Culture Focus Group

 

Purpose:        To collect data on these three aspects of school culture

1)     Cleanliness

2)     Safety

3)     Respect

 

Respect Survey:

 

1. Do you feel respected by your peers in a class environment?

 

1)     24% of kids interviewed said they always felt respected by peers in a class environment.

2)     68% said they sometimes felt respected by peers

3)     8% said they occasionally feel respected by peers

4)     0% said they never feel respected by their peers

 

2. Do you feel that students respect teachers?

 

            1) 0% of kids interviewed said that they feel that students always respect

teachers

                  2) 88% said they think that students sometimes respect teachers

3)12 % said they think that students occasionally respect teacher

4)0 % said they think that students never respect teachers

 


3. How many of your classes provide an equal atmosphere of respect amongst students and teachers?

 

1)     20% of the kids interviewed said that they felt that 100% of their classes provided an equal atmosphere of respect amongst students and teachers.

2)     8% said that they felt 83% of their classes provided equal atmosphere

3)     8% said that they felt 80% of their classes provided equal atmosphere

4)     20% said that they felt 66% of their classes provided equal atmosphere

5)     4% said that they felt 50% of their classes provided equal atmosphere

6)     4% said that they felt 40% of their classes provided equal atmosphere

7)     16% said that they felt 33% of their classes provided equal atmosphere

8)     4% said that they felt 20% of their classes provided equal atmosphere

9)     4% said that they felt 16% of their classes provided equal atmosphere

 

 

 

 

 

4.      How should students improve upon the atmosphere to promote respect? How should teachers improve atmosphere?

 

1)     Students:

a)     Listen to teachers

b)     Not be mean/violent

c)      Treat people the way they want to be treated

d)     Be motivated to learn

e)     Get rid of negativity

f)        Just do what they are told

g)     Respect teachers and other students

h)      Just be cool to each other and its all good

 

2)     Teachers:

a)     Be in tune with the students

b)     Teachers should be super laid back or super strict to get respect

c)      Give harsher punishment- take away points because kids do not care about detentions

d)     Listen to students

e)     Get on a personal level with students

f)        Be more aggressive and kick kids out of class

g)     Take kids opinions on projects into consideration

h)      Enforce rules from the start and punish students, don’t just threaten

i)        Not get crazy, they aren’t parents

j)        Don’t get annoyed when kids don’t get it and treat kids like they are stupid

k)      Don’t accuse kids of cheating (ex/ cliff notes) without proof

 

5.      What qualities in a teacher lead you as a student to treat them with respect?

6. Does the reputation of a teacher lead you as a student to treat them differently?

           

1)     66% said yes

2)     34% said no

3)     Of the ones that said yes, some interesting reasons for how so are:

a)     “You test the teachers to know how far you can go”

b)     “You know what you can get away with in class”

c)      ”If you hear they are mean, students might not respect them”

d)     “I don’t take the teacher seriously and end up doing and learning on my own.”

e)     “I treat teachers differently who I hear flirt with students or think that they are superior”

f)        “If they are known as strict I’ll act differently and same as laid back”

g)     “If they have a bad reputation, I have no respect for them”

h)      “I’m scared of them”

i)        “Some teachers have a reputation for being tough so students work harder”

 

Cleanliness Survey:

 

1.      Do you think that if there were an incentive program for students to keep our school free of trash it would help? (ex/ reward, leave class early, extended lunch)

 

1)15% of kids interviewed said that they think an incentive program would definitely help.

3)     80% said it would help somewhat

4)     2% said it would not help at all

5)     2% didn’t know

 

2.      How long do you think that it takes Gable to clean up after lunch?

 

1)     0 % thought it took 0-30 mins.

2)     24% thought it took 30-60 mins

3)     34% thought it took 60-90 mins

4)     41% thought it took more than 90 mins

 

3.      How many janitors are on campus during the day?

 

1)     7% thought there are 5+ janitors

2)     7% thought there are 4 janitors

3)     7% thought there are 3 janitors

4)     20% thought there are 2 janitors

5)     59%  thought there is 1 janitor

6)     0% thought there 0 janitors on staff

 

4.      Do you feel that ESHS is a clean and orderly place?

 

1)     10% said ESHS is defiantly clean and orderly.

2)     65% said ESHS is somewhat clean and orderly

3)     25% said ESHS is not really clean and orderly

4)     0% said that ESHS is not at all clean and orderly

 

5.      Do you think that having more trash cans around would improve campus cleanliness?

 

1) 39% said it would definitely help to have more trash cans

            2) 46% said it would help somewhat to have more trash cans

3) 15% said it would not really help to have more trash cans

4) 0% said it would not help at all

 

6.      Does the cleanliness of the campus affect your learning environment as a student?

 

1)     17% said the cleanliness definitely affects learning

2)     37% said the cleanliness somewhat affects learning

3)     37% said the cleanliness doesn’t really affect learning

4)     10% said the cleanliness doesn’t affect learning at all

 

Safety Survey

 

1.      Do you feel safe on the ESHS campus?

1)     58% of the kids interviewed said that they always felt safe

2)     39% of the kids interviewed said that they sometimes felt safe

3)     0% of the kids interviewed said that they occasionally  felt safe

4)     3% of the kids interviewed said that they never felt safe

 

2.      Do you think that if there was an emergency that adequate help would be available and assistance would be provided immediately?

1)     29% said that assistance would definitely be available

2)     71% said that assistance would be somewhat available

3)     3% said that assistance would not really be available

4)     0% said that assistance would not be available at all

 

3.      Do you like the fact that we have an open campus , in the sense that it is not gated in?

1) 100% of the students interviewed said that yes, they like the open campus that we now have

 

 

4.      Are there any visible safety issues on campus?

 

1)     39% said that yes, there are safety issues visible

2)     61% said that no, there aren’t any visible safety issues

3)     For those that said yes, example follow:

a)     71% of kids that said yes mentioned the construction

b)     29% mentioned dirty bathrooms

c)      14% mentioned gym floor conditions (i.e. holes)

 

5.      Are there aspects of he campus that you feel harm you health?

 

1)     35% of kids interviewed said that yes, there are aspects of campus that they feel are harmful to their health

2)     65% of kids interviewed said that no, there are not aspects of campus that they feel are harmful to their health

3)     For those that said yes, example follow:

a)     45% of kids that said yes mentioned the Dust from construction site

d)     9% mentioned that too much homework results in not enough sleep

b)     18% mentioned dirty bathrooms (no soap, towels, and should not have handles on doors but push doors)

c)      18% mentioned the asbestos

 

6.      Would you prefer a gated or fenced in campus?

 

1) 100% of the students interviewed said that they would not prefer a gated campus
