Meeting Minutes
El Segundo High School Library
May 5, 2004
 
President Barbara Briney called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m.
 
Inspiration - Aleta Pottenger
Shared a passage entitled, "I’ll be happy when…" for inspiration.
 
Reading and Approval of Minutes - Stephanie Fujii
The minutes of April 7, 2004 have been approved by committee as written.  The approved minutes were circulated for additional review along with the Meeting Attendance and Volunteer Hours Registration sheet (see attached).
 
Treasurer’s Report - Brenda Ross
The balance on hand as of April 1, 2004 was $20,899.46 with receipts in the amount of $405.00 and disbursements in the amount of $864.19 leaving a balance on hand as of April 30, 2004 of $20,440.27.  The Treasurer’s report was accepted and attached for audit (see attached).
 
There was discussion and a motion made regarding an increase of the budget by $100 to cover State and National convention costs (see motion).
 
Slate of Officers for the 2004-2005 School Year - Barbara Briney
The list of officers on the Executive Board for the upcoming school year was read and ratified.  The Chairpersons’ names were also read. These positions will be ratified in September.
 
Principal’s Report - Dr. Hart
The testing schedule for STAR was discussed (see attached).  Dr. Hart shared the sports schedules for the coming week.  Tours will be conducted for prospective permit students on Friday, May 7.  The Prom is Saturday, May 15.  The drama department has an upcoming presentation of "Gypsy".  Focus groups will be meeting May 11 at 2:00 p.m.
 
School Board - Chris Powell for Jo Ann Edlefsen
The budget appears to be sound.  Regarding construction, the new building should be occupied by May 29.  There is some delay on parking lot completion.  Phase 3 construction (girl’s gym and cafeteria) has begun.  Discussion about a new marquee for the front of the school. A design must be approved.  Donations were made by the Senior class and a private donor.
 
President’s Report - Barbara Briney
State PTA convention is on-going.  Information was shared about the classes and their activities.  The deadline to submit information to Noel Salinda regarding Eagle Ears is May 7.  The bricks are ready to be picked up and placement should start in a few weeks.
The legislative trip to Sacramento is scheduled for June 1.  The Ed Foundation has made a $250,000 pledge to the district.  A commitment of $150,000 will go for textbook funding and the balance to go to expenses at the high school.  In the Reflections Contest, 2 students received 2nd place recognition from 33rd District (one student in Visual Arts and one in Photography).
 
Board and Committee Reports 
Teacher Appreciation -  Paula Koch reported on the events of the week and shared that all is going well.  She thanked her committee for their support.
Scholarship Committee - Chairperson Marcy Dugan reported that her committee would be meeting Tuesday, May 11 at 7:00 p.m. at the Stick and Stein.
Honorary Service -  Patty Ronney shared information about this year’s recipients.
Standing Rules - Linda Pollard explained how the rules were modified and took questions from the floor. A draft of the new Standing Rules for 2004-2005 were distributed.  The Standing Rules draft will be posted and voted on at the next meeting.
Class Rep Reports
 Freshmen - Barbara Briney shared that the class sold out of teriyaki chicken  sandwiches at the Hometown Fair.
 Sophomores - nothing to report.
 Juniors - Marcy Dugan reported the class would be selling flowers at Middle and  High school graduations.  Additionally, it was reported the Junior class booth at  the Hometown Fair was a big success.
 Seniors - nothing to report.
 
New Business
A request was made that a cap and gown be purchased for a graduate in need (see motion).
 
Bills to be Paid
It was agreed to ratify checks #2308 - 2312 and to pay current bills, authorizing payments #2308 - 2312 to be drawn and the treasurer to pay the same in the amount of $713.97 (see motion).
