Meeting Minutes

El Segundo High Library

October 6, 2004

 

President Kathie Stabile called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m. Kathie asked for a moment of silence to honor Carlene Tanaka’s passing, Kathie led the Pledge of Allegiance.  The inspiration given by Aleta Pottenger was titled “A Short Essay – The Privilege of Voting”.  Thirty members were in attendance with the following members excused: Jayne Pimlott, Tammy Reeves, Yvonne Portillo.  Carolyn Elder was appointed to be acting parliamentarian.  

 

Reading and Approval of Minutes – Marva Murray

The minutes of the September 8, 2004 meeting have been approved by committee as corrected. The approved minutes were circulated for additional review along with the Meeting Attendance sheet. The Volunteer hour sheet was passed around.

 

Treasurer’s Report – Brenda Ross

The balance on hand as of September 1, 2004 was $22,736.70 with receipts in the amount of $9,488.64 and disbursements in the amount of $4,591.41 leaving a balance on hand as of September 30, 2004 of $27,633.93.  The treasurer’s report was accepted and attached for audit (see attached).

 

Speaker – Karen Çarr

Ms. Carr spoke to us regarding the South Bay Youth Project, which provides services for the South Bay area.  A video from the 2003 Medieval Festivities fundraiser was shown.  Information and pamphlets were passed out.  We were invited to attend the Castle of Friends fundraiser to be held on October 24, 2004.

 

Student Report – Amber Cannon

Amber is the ASB Vice-President.  She asked for possible volunteers to sell tickets at football games.  She discussed class fundraisers, the Coronation and homecoming. 

 

Unfinished Business

The Executive Board recommends to the general membership that we accept the 2004-05 budget with proposed amendments:

  1. Remove “student” from Student Programs/Gifts to School.
  2. Delete line item Sacramento Trip.
  3. Add $500.00 to Legislation and remove same from Programs/Gifts for a total of $600.00.

Discussion followed and motion passed.

 

New Business

The Executive Board recommends to the general membership that we purchase the lock-down classroom kits for classrooms and offices at a cost not to exceed $3,000.  Discussion followed with motion passed.

It was moved by Chris Powell that we give a $250.00 donation to the South Bay Youth Project.  Discussion followed with motion carried.

 

Marcy Dugan moved to donate $50.00 to the Education Foundation in honor of Carlene Tanaka.  Motion carried.

 

Principal’s Report – Dr. Hart

Dr. Hart reviewed the upcoming events and sports for the month of October, He explained about Focus Groups for the high school asking for volunteers.  November 1st will be a staff development day with UCLA faculty assisting groups of ESUSD teachers.  He explained how monies earned from the television and movie rentals of ESHS were used. 

 

School Board Report –   JoAnn Edlefson

The dedication of the new Science and Arts building will be October 25th at 4:00 pm.

The band is looking for host families for visiting Austrian students from October 12th – 27th.  The summer board approved a program for a speaker to visit the middle school and high school to discuss TeenLine.  ROAD is working to set up this program, which is presently available to students.

 

Executive Board Reports

 

President’s Report – Kathie Stabile

Please make certain to pay your membership dues, Kathie advised of some directory corrections.  The Run for Education will be March 19, 2005 and Kathie asked for a counsel coordinator. 

 

Parliamentarian – Tammy Reeves

Kathie reported for Tammy that we are waiting for forms from the district to begin by-law changes.

 

Fund-Raising – Barbara Briney

A total of $1550.00 of new brick orders have been received.  These will hhopefully be installed by Homecoming.

 

Committee Reports

 

Membership – Joan Lindsay

Our membership currently has 608 members with $610.00 in donations.  A total of 39 teachers, school board members and our superintendant have joined.

 

Reflections – Yvonne Portillo

Marva Murray gave the report in Yvonne’s absence.  Teachers have been notified and posters have been displayed around the school.  Flyers have been given to each teacher for their classroom.  Students may enter any or all of the areas.

 

Eagle Ears

Any information needs to be given to Tammy by October 8th.  Email will come out on November 1st.

 

Freshman Class Report  - Beth Muraida

The freshman class will be selling ESHS ornaments at homecoming.

 

Sophomore Class Report – Barbara Briney

Blankets are sold out and a waiting list has been formed.  They are selling polo and sweat shirts.

 

Junior Class Report– Kathy Buck

The junior class is in charge of football snack bar and the coronation.  They are working on putting together a better procedure book for the junior parent representatives.

 

Senior Class Report – Marcy Dugan

The Halloween party will be October 30th at Stick and Stein.  They are looking for Silent Auction items.  Homecoming tee shirts will be for sale at homecoming.

 

Bills to be Paid 

It was agreed to ratify checks #2329 – 2336 and to pay current bills, authorizing payments #2329 – 2336 to be drawn and the treasurer to pay the same in the amount of $5,305.56. (see  motion)

Announcements

Arlene Charsha is in attendance to sell tickets for the Women’s Club Fashion Show, October 23rd.  Kathy Buck announced the junior class carwash.
