Meeting Minutes

El Segundo High School Library

February 2, 2005

 

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 pm by President Kathie Stabile.  Kathy Gardner led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.  

 

Introductions

Kathie introduced our new School Board representative, Kathy Wiley.   Janice Hickey, a teacher representative was introduced.

 

Inspiration – Aleta Pottenger

Aleta read an inspiration called “Today I Wish”

 

Correspondence

There was no correspondence to be read.

 

Secretary Report – Marva Murray

Marva announced that the December meeting minutes were approved as corrected.

 

Auditor’s Report - Chris Powell

Chris announced that he had examined the records of treasurer and books were found to be correct. Jayne Pimlott moved that we adopt the audit report.  Motion carried.

 

Treasurer’s Report – Brenda Ross

The balance on hand as of December 1, 2004 was $26,781.89.  Receipts in the amount of $956.00 and disbursements in the amount of $4,202.31 gave us a balance on hand as of January 31, 2005 of $24,535.58

 

Choir Fundraiser – Ashley Pottenger came to inform us of a chorus fundraiser to take place on February 26th.  Tickets are $10.00 each.  Funds raised will assist in a spring trip. 

 

New Business

Honorary Service – MarcyDugan will be chairperson.  Kathy Gardner moved to ratify Marcy Dugan as the High School Honorary Service Chairperson.  Motion passed.

The committee members are Jayne Pimlott, Mike Meza, Stephanie Fujii, and Becka Wilder.  Marcy has forms for nominating people.  Forms are also in the office.  The deadline is February 28th.

 

Nominating Committee – Members to serve are Jayne Pimlott, Judy Jenkins, Tammy Reeves, Paula Rasmussan, and Robin Funk.  Alternates will be Brenda Ross, Kathy Gardner, and Aleta Pottenger.

 

Gift to School – Chris Powell presented a possible project for PTA to purchase benches for our last construction area.  The cost of 14 benches would be $10,255.76.  Beth Muraida, Brenda Ross, Dr. Hart, and Marva Murray volunteered to be on a gift committee.  Kathie will set up the meeting time and date.

 

Principal’s Report – Dr. Hart

We are presently in Finals Week.  Tuesday will be a minimum day with Focus Groups meeting to discuss the first inter-curricular project for the school.  The theme was Astronomy.  The winter season for sports is coming to an end.  The sophomores will be taking a CACASE test in March.

 

Student Report

There was no report.

 

School Board Report – Kathy Wiley

The school board gave $5,000 to the high school for a projection system for the Hall of Fame room.  The board has adopted the 2005-2006 calendar.  The teachers are working on a district wide writing project.  We have lost three to four weeks on the construction project because of the heavy rains in January.  They now have a hopeful deadline of June 1, 2005.  The school should be totally prepared for the September 2005 beginning.

 

Historian Report – Tish Mitchell

Our Historian report is due in March.  Please sign up with your work hours.  Tish will email us to give suggestions for work we may have forgotten to report.

 

Executive Board Reports

 

President – Kathie Stabile

Kathie asked us to please take the parent survey on line.  We received over $200. from Family Photos high school participation.  The lock-down kits are in each teacher’s room.  We are now disassembling old kits to give to the teachers.  She attended a WASC meeting and three major issues being discussed are 1) the number of boys in Honors/AP classes, 2) reading comprehension of all subjects,   3) addressing the needs of the middle group of students.  PTA 33rd district is collecting books for youth camps.  A paper was distributed with titles needed.  They also take monetary donations.

 

Second Vice-President – Robin Funk

Robin has been arranging for a Sylvan Springtime SAT prep one day course.  It will be a diagnostic day with a parent program.  The days scheduled are February 26th and March 5th   and the hours would be Saturday mornings from 9:00 – 12:30.   This would be available to all students and all grades.  Robin moved that the PTA present the SAT prep and parent program.  Motion passed.

 

Fund-Raising

Run for Education applications are available and volunteers are needed.  The run is on March 19th.

 

 

Parliamentarian – Tammy Reeves

The by-laws committee met to discuss revisions.  They will be presented at a later meeting. 

 

Committee Reports

 

Membership

We now have 625 members.  All but six teachers have joined.

 

Reflections

Yvonne Portillo reported that there will be an exhibit of all art work in the ESHS library on Thursday, February 10th.  The event will be from 5 – 8 pm.  There are approximately 130 entries from our school.  She asked for refreshment donations.

 

Class Reports

  • Freshmen  The ornaments are still for sale at $18.00 each.  There is a possibility that they will not be able to have a booth at the 4th of July day at Recreation Park.
  • Sophomores – The Winter Formal was cancelled.
  • Juniors – They are selling items for the snack bar at basketball games.  They are busy with Prom plans. 
  • Seniors – The senior T-shirts are to be ordered by Friday, February 11th.  The class voted on Disneyland for Grad night.

 

Announcements

Beth Muraida reminded members about Family Forum.  Also, the PTA council is looking for members to be on the board.  If interested, please see her.

The Founder’s Day Tea will be on April 7th. 

Ms. Janice Hickey thanked us for Teacher Appreciation weeks.

On February 4th we are being asked to wear red for women in support of Heart Disease.

It was agreed to ratify checks #2347 – 2353 and to pay current bills, authorizing payments # 2243 – 2246 to be drawn and the treasurer to pay the same in the amount of
