Meeting Minutes

El Segundo High School Library

March 2, 2005

 

The meeting was called to order at 7:05 pm by President Kathie Stabile.  Kathie led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.  Suz Truax was appointed as acting parliamentarian.

Aleta read an inspiration about parenting.

 

Introductiions

New parents introduced themselves.  Teachers Sarah Briney, Jennifer Hughes, Tammy Pow, and Vanessa Giaimo were in attendance.

 

Correspondence

There was no correspondence to be read.

 

Secretary Report – Marva Murray

Marva announced that the February meeting minutes were approved as corrected.

 

Scholarship Request

A student from Spanish Club made a request that we assist her in her Spanish Club trip to Spain over Spring break.

 

Treasurer’s Report – Brenda Ross

The balance on hand as of February 1, 2005 was $24,535.58.  Receipts in the amount of $1,800.00 and disbursements in the amount of $2,087,78 gave us a balance on hand as of February 28, 2005 of $24,247.80.

 

Student Report

There was no student report.

 

New Business

Spain Scholarship – A discussion was held regarding the request from the Spanish Club member.  It was moved by Marcy Dugan and seconded that we write a check for $50.00 for the student.  A hand vote was held and the motion died in a tie.  A goodwill offering envelope was sent around for the student. 

 

Gift Committee Report – It was moved by Paula Koch and seconded that the PTA purchase one bench for the school at a cost not to exceed $800.00.  Discussion involved suggestions that we get donations from individuals and organizations to pay for the remaining benches requested.  Motion passed.

 

Every 15 Minutes – This project teaches students about drunk driving.  Volunteers to participate were asked to sign up tonight.  We have budgeted $500.00 to ROAD for this venture.  It will be held on May 25th & 26th.

 

Nominating Committee – The group met on February 17th.  Robin Funk was voted chairperson.  She gave the committee report.  The nominations were announced and they will be posted at the school for 30 days.  We will vote at the April meeting. 

 

Principal’s Report – Dr. Hart

On March 16th and 17th the Sophomores will be taking the CAHSEE exam which is a high school exit exam.  Any Junior failing last year must take it this year.  There will be a blood drive on March 22nd.  The Senior Citizen Tea will be held on April 6th.  ASB elections will be held after Spring break.

 

School Board Report – Kathy Wiley

There has been discussion regarding controversial drama production language and this will be examined.  The School Board is looking at the cost of the wear and tear on our fields by other organizations after school and on weekends.  An agreement with the Teachers’ Association has been approved.  There will be some scheduling changes for banking time for teacher meetings.  Also, we must add 6,000 minutes to the school year.  There have been cross-grade meetings and they are going well.  The UCLA instructors coming to our district have had great remarks about our teachers.  The remodeling is six weeks behind due to rains.  The workers have had to put on a third regrading.  Also, there is a concrete shortage at present.

 

Executive Board Reports

 

President – Kathie Stabile

The crossing guard at Center Street School has passed away.  Center Street School is still accepting donations for their fund.  It was moved by Kathy Gardner and seconded that we make a donation to the Frank Lombardi fund.  Motion passed.

Kathie thanked Yvonne Portillo for her work on the Reflections and for the wonderful display evening on February 10th.

 

Historian Report – Tish Mitchell

Tish has prepared a projected list of hours.  Please check it as it comes to your table.

 

Second Vice-President – Robin Funk

Robin spoke about the SAT practice test program.  There were 40 parents and 72 students in attendance.  The parents were presented with college admissions information.  The follow-up meeting will be on March 5th.  She felt that it had been a great success.

 

Fifth Vice-President / Fund-Raising – Barbara Briney

An additional 28 bricks have been sold and 30 need to be installed.  Run for Education volunteers are still needed.

 

Parliamentarian

The by-law revisions will be discussed at the next meeting.

 

Committee Reports

 

Honorary Service – The committee met and chose the honorees for April 7th.

 

Founder’s Day Tea – The theme is Helping Dreams Soar.  The set-up will be at 3:00 in the afternoon on April 7th.  Clean-up volunteers are welcomed.

 

Teacher Appreciation – Kathy Gardner is in charge.  It will be held the week of May 2nd – May 6th.

 

Scholarship Committee – The following members volunteered to be on the committee – Denise Fucci, Suz Truax, Kathy Buck, Ann Coles, Cindee Topar, and Robin Funk.   It was moved by Brenda Ross and seconded that we approve the scholarship committee.  Motion passed.

 

Membership – We have 632 members with all but 5 teachers joining. 

Class Reports

  • Seniors – They are meeting to go over their responsibilities for grad night, baccalaureate, and awards night.
  • Juniors – They have picked their prom site.  The date is May 28th.  The class has made $8,000 on the snack bar this year.
  • Sophomores – They had a Coldstone fundraiser.
  • Freshmen – The class is still selling the sun catchers etched with ESHS.

 

Bills to Be Paid – Paula Koch

It was agreed to ratify checks #2354– 2362 and to pay current bills, authorizing payments # 2254 – 2262 to be drawn and the treasurer to pay the same in the amount of

Announcements

A paper was handed out inviting the public to attend an Aquatic Master Plan workshop on Wednesday, March 9th.

The goodwill envelope brought $160.00 for the scholarship for the Spanish Club student.
