RUBRIC SCORING
6 (Truly Exceptional; A)
The student demonstrates
rigorous and in-depth understanding of mathematical ideas and the work is
constantly correct and complete. The
student shows a thorough understanding of mathematical concepts and content,
and communicates clear and logical explanations of solutions. The student supports solutions with evidence
and generalizes, connects, and extends concepts. The student effectively uses mathematical
language, diagrams, graphs, and pictures, and shows skillful and accurate use
of mathematical tools and procedures.
The student demonstrates a unique approach to the problem.
5(Commendable; A-)
The student demonstrates a
solid understanding of mathematical ideas and the work is essentially correct
and complete and may contain minor flaws.
The student communicates explanations of solutions. The student supports
solutions with evidence and connects, and extends concepts. The student uses mathematical language,
diagrams, graphs, and pictures appropriately, and accurately uses mathematical
tools and procedures.
4 (Satisfactory: B or C+)
The student demonstrates a
substantial understanding of mathematical ideas and the work is usually correct
and complete and may contain flaws. The
student communicates explanations of solutions for most tasks. The student
supports solutions with evidence and may solve problems without connecting or
extending concepts. The student uses
mathematical language, diagrams, graphs, and pictures frequently, and appropriately
uses mathematical tools and procedures.
3 (Proficient: B- or C)
The student demonstrates a
basic understanding of mathematical ideas and the work is sometimes correct and
complete and may lack depth or show gaps in understanding of some concepts. The student communicates explanations of
solutions for some tasks. The student may show ineffective or inconsistent
problem solving. The student shows some
evidence of use of mathematical language, diagrams, graphs, and pictures, and shows
some appropriate use of mathematical tools and procedures.
2 (Limited: C- or D)
The student demonstrates a limited understanding of mathematical ideas and there is little evidence of correct solutions. There are limited explanations of solutions. The student does not support solutions with evidence. The student rarely uses mathematical language, diagrams, graphs, and pictures and incorrectly uses mathematical tools and procedures.
1 (Minimal: D-or F)
The student demonstrates little or no evidence of understanding of mathematical ideas and the solution is not correct. There are limited or no explanations of solutions. The student does not support solutions with evidence. The student does not use mathematical language, diagrams, graphs, and pictures and incorrectly uses mathematical tools and procedures.
