English 11 Honors delves into all aspects of rhetoric in order to further pursue an academically-enriching and university preparatory program.  During the year, to parallel the study of U.S. History, we will be looking at literature to examine attitudes, behavior patterns and ideals which are "typically American" We will study our nation's literature within a chronological, historical perspective.

Content Standards

The Advanced Placement program is designed as an introductory college-level course in reading and critical analysis of literature.  This involves language as a symbolic process and literature as experience preserved in language. Because any artist creates within the framework of his or her world a work of art provides us with a mirror of the artist's age and culture.  In the AP course emphasis will be placed in genre, style, and vision as a reflection of the artist's world

Academic Decathlon

Academic Decathlon is open to all students with all grade point averages.  The team is comprised of nine students: 3 with "A" averages, 3 with "B" averages, and 3 with "C or lower" averages.  The teams members compete in 10 disciplines: essay writing, literature, math, speech, interview, social science, economics, art, music, and superquiz, which for 2004 is astronomy.

The award-wining Golden Eagle Yearbook is totally designed and produced by the El Segundo High School yearbook staff.  The Editor-in-Chief and assistant editors oversee the staff who sell ads, write "copy" take photos and design the pages.  Editors are generally seniors; students from all grade levels are encouraged to join, as editors-in-training. Enrollment is based on an interview process undertaken in the Spring semester for the following year's book.
