The Research Paper
In
high school you are expected to develop a strong foundation for
research-driven writing.
The research paper
will be the best evidence of your understanding of this process.
You will prepare a
research paper on a controversial topic that follows established
guidelines for both content (TLQ) and formatting (MLA).
Panic, right? Well, not so much. The ninth grade paper is completed as
a process. This process reoccurs over time and requires reflection,
feedback, and revision. It is a process that mostly takes place within
the classroom and within peer groups. MOSTLY. Not exclusively. (Okay,
now you can panic a little.)
We
will dedicate time in class to choose and develop a topic and thesis
statement. During this time we will learn how to document your
sources within the text and in a Works Cited page. We will then
dedicate class periods to develop drafts and work as a team. Most of the real work, however, the
solitary craft of
writing and revision, will be assigned as homework. As long as you
complete these assignments and follow the schedule, the entire term
paper process will be, if not easier, at least much less problematic.
IN-CLASS PARTICIPATION AND COMPLETION OF HOMEWORK IS CRITICAL for this
unit. |
