Senior Governor Speaks Out

I was honestly having a hard time coming up with something to write this month.  The usual graduation stuff comes to mind but I wasn’t exactly into having you read this without me feeling strongly about the topic.  Through an incident that occurred in a class of mine, I thought of a pretty good one but felt shaky about it.  Long story short, I’ve had three separate, completely independent “assurances” so it must be relevant.  One of them, mind you, was from the other side of the country.

I want my theme for October, along with the district, to be Character.  That’s a powerful word.  It means and can do a lot for those that have it.  One thing that we as seniors have to think about is not only our grades, but also our growth, maturity wise.  It may seem irrelevant but acknowledge that college is around the corner.  For some of you going to “party schools”, that wasn’t a good example but still, please remember that in all of your “enjoying of life”, make sure that you’re also growing in life.  Both are important, probably even equally.  My desire in this letter is to make sure that yes, our senior year is the best possible-excuse me, EVER, but also that it would be one where we begin to make a positive influence in our community and beyond.

DECEMBER TESTS ARE THE LAST ONES THAT MOST UNIVERSITIES WILL ACCEPT!!!*

1.       If you can’t choose between the ACT and the SAT there’s no harm in taking both and letting the college decide which score to emphasize.  While colleges accept both tests, they will disregard the lesser scores.  The two tests seem similar, however, there are significant differences.  The SAT emphasized basic aptitude and “creative” thinking, and the ACT is based more on skills and content learned in school.  They are measuring different things.  The test on format differs too.  While the SAT is divided into two sections, verbal and math, the ACT has four sections (English test, Mathematics test, Reading test, and Science Reasoning test) which touch on many more content areas.  Students who are verbally inclined may do better on the ACT because there is not as much math as on the SAT.

2.       Students interested in the University of California System must take three Subject tests (SAT II), including writing, math, and another subject of your choice.  These tests CANNOT be taken on the same day as the SAT.

3.       The SAT / ACT tests are not given at El Segundo High School.  Some of the school in the area giving the tests include: Westchester HS, Redondo Union HS, and El Camino College.
