Attendees: Kathy Clemmer (ESHS ELD Coordinator), Branka O’Brien (ESHS ELD teacher), Elisa Bonilla (ESHS ELD para-professional), Adrian Rodriguez (ELL student in 11th grade general education classes), German Baqurero (11th grade ELL student enrolled in the ELD class), Jordan Stewart (11th grade student in general education), Wilfredo Contreras (parent of an ELL student at beginning level proficiency, currently enrolled in two ELD classes), Jim Garza (Associate Principal)
Question posed by Kathy Clemmer: “Is the ELD program at ESHS helping you improve your English and does it support you in your other classes? Is there anything we need to do to improve the support? Materials?”
· German: “Yes. I like having a separate ELD class where Ms. O’Brien and Ms. Bonilla work with me on my English and my other classes. I have been in this class since my freshman year, and I like it. I did not have a class or support at my middle school in Hawthorne. I like the program the way it is, everything is fine.”
· Adrian: “I think my teachers are doing enough to help me in my classes. My English is fine. I don’t need anything else”
· Jordan: “I have no idea who the ELL students are in my classes.”
· Mr. Contreras: “My daughter arrived to the United States last year and did not have any training in English. Within the couple of months that she has been enrolled in ELD here at the high school, her English has improved quite a bit. I appreciate the support she is receiving from both Ms. O’Brien and especially from Ms. Bonilla in terms of working with the other teachers in helping my daughter to be successful. My daughter is both happy and grateful to be here and be part of this program. Thank you.”
Question posed by Kathy Clemmer: “Do you want to have the ESHS Site Council take on the ELAC responsibilities?”
Mr. Contreras: “How would this work, and what would happen with the ELD program?”
Garza: “The Site Council is a group of teachers, parents, students, and the principal that meets once a month to discuss school site issues. If we decide to vote over our responsibilities, then this group would oversee the ELD program at ESHS.”
Clemmer: “I would attend the Site Council meetings as the representative for ELAC, and make sure that the needs of our ELL students are met.”
German and Mr. Contreras: “O.k., as long as the ELL program is supported.”
Vote: Ms. Bonilla called for a vote on transferring responsibilities to the ESHS Site Council. Mr. Garza, seconded this motion. The vote in favor was unanimous.
