COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

Course Title:                 Spanish II

Department:                  Foreign Language

Grade Level:                 9-12

 

Spanish IIAB is intended to reinforce the skills learned in Spanish IAB: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Emphasis is on perfecting pronunciation, mastery of the basic grammatical structures, and increased communicative proficiency. Acquisition of functional vocabulary is expected. Students will be exposed to the past tenses found in short reading selections and will be expected to apply them in their writing and speaking. Students will have the opportunity to participate in field trips to study art at the Norton Simon Art Museum, attend Spanish language performances for students such as Don Quichote or the Ballet Folklorico.

 

Length: One year         

Prerequisite for enrollment: 80% or better in Middle School Spanish 1; 70% or better in High School Spanish 1

Recommendation for Enrollment: Teacher Recommendation

COURSE OUTLINE AND STANDARDS

 

 

COMMUNICATION

 

Standard 1.1  Students engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions.

·         Negotiate simple transactions related to TRANSPORTATION, GROCERY AND DEPARTMENT STORES USING PRESENT, PAST AND FUTURE TENSES. Use COMPARATIVES AND SUPERLATIVES. Be able to USE THE TELEPHONE. (EHS)  (Effective communication)

·         Discuss PERSONAL HYGIENE, DAILY ROUTINES using REFLEXIVE VERBS IN PRESENT, PAST, AND FUTURE TENSES (ESHS) (Integration of Core Knowledge; Effective Communication)

·        Prepare a simple narrative using the PAST TENSE, AND HAVE READING KNOWLEDGE OF THE IMPERFECT TENSE.  (ESHS) (Integration of Core knowledge, Effective communication)

·        Create a compound complex sentence using CONJUNCTIONS, and SUBORDINATE CLAUSES with RELATIVE PRONOUNS to make predictions. (ESHS) (Effective Communication; Critical Thinking)

·        Identify and use DIRECT AND INDIRECT OBJECT PRONOUNS in affirmative and negative commands as well as past, present and future declarative sentences. (ESHS) (Core knowledge, Communication)

 

·        Standard 1.2  Students understand and interpret written and spoken language on a variety of topics:

·        Review and add to the vocabulary acquired in Spanish IAB: ANIMALS, VEHICLES, PROFESSIONS, AND FEATURES OF NATURE, NATIONALITIES AND LANGUAGES. OBJECTS FOUND IN A HOME

Standard 2.1 Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practices and perspectives of the culture studied.

·        Compare and contrast the practices and perspectives of the urban v.s. provincial people, also between genders and ages. (ESHS)  (Communication, Critical thinking, Personal development)

Standard 2.2 Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the products and perspectives of the culture studied.
