Course Title:     Exceptional Child

Department:      Applied & Fine Arts

Grade Levels:   11-12

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

The purpose of this class is to introduce the students to the characteristics of exceptional children and their education.  Students spend four (4) days per week off grounds at a Special Education site.  A variety of handicapping conditions will be explored as well as the laws that protect a child with exceptional needs.

 

Length:  One Semester

Prerequisite of Enrollment:  None

Recommendation: Interest

Type of Course: Elective.  May receive credit for Psychology

 

 

COURSE OUTLINE AND STANDARDS

Based on the ESHS Standards

1.0    Students assist the teacher on site (Imperial and Center Street) with exceptional children by:

1.1    Supporting activities and lessons

1.2    Designing teaching aides to support student learning

1.3    Tutoring one on one

 

2.0    Students learn about physical and emotional disabilities and their impact on student learning in a classroom environment.

2.1  Students also learn about the laws protecting students with special needs.

 

3.0    Students apply their knowledge by working with exceptional children on site.

 

INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS

 

  1. Lecture once a week on physical and emotional disabilities and the laws protecting these students.
  2. Journal
  3. Project
  4. Assisting students with exceptional needs in the classroom

 

 

EVALUATION/GRADING OF STUDENT WORK

 

  1. Journal
  2. Final essay of experiences and connection to theory
  3. Final project
