Standard 1: Health and Safety

2.1 Personal Safety

(Integration of Core Knowledge; Critical Thinking/Problem Solving)

Students will understand the importance of personal safety (eye protection; handling toxic substances; use of protective clothing, etc.) in wood product manufacturing. They will demonstrate knowledge of personal safety and safe work practices. They will exhibit a positive attitude regarding personal safety; demonstrate ability to safely handle toxic materials; and use protective clothing and equipment when needed.

2.2 Work Site Safety

(Integration of Core Knowledge; Critical Thinking/Problem Solving)

Students will understand the importance of work site safety (hazardous waste disposal; fire safety; tools and machines; etc.) in wood product manufacturing. They will demonstrate knowledge of work site safety and safe work practices. They will exhibit a positive attitude regarding work site safety, demonstrate ability to safely use tools, machines, and manufacturing materials  and create and maintain a safe working environment.

Standard 2: Basic Skills

2.3 Manufacturing Math

(Integration of Core Knowledge; Critical Thinking/Problem Solving)

Students will understand mathematical processes (measuring, computing, applying trigonometry, etc.) and know how to apply them in wood product manufacturing. They will demonstrate ability to apply math skills in solving problems in wood product manufacturing.

2.4 Communication Skills

(Integration of Core Knowledge; Critical Thinking/Problem Solving; Effective Communication)

Students will understand communication processes (reading, writing, talking, listening, etc.) and know how to apply them in wood product manufacturing. They will demonstrate ability to apply communication skills by reading, presenting oral and written information, and listening to and following directions on wood product manufacturing assignments.

Standard 3: Orientation to the Industry

2.5      Careers

(Integration of Core Knowledge; Critical Thinking/Problem Solving; Personal and Social Development)

Students will know the careers available in wood product manufacturing and related occupations (custom crafts, furniture making, cabinetmaking, marketing, etc.) and how to develop a career plan. They will identify career opportunities in wood product manufacturing and related occupations, identify occupations of interest, and develop a career plan.

2.6. Quality Manufacturing

(Integration of Core Knowledge; Critical Thinking/Problem Solving)

Students will understand the importance of quality work cabinetmaking (accuracy, neatness, timeliness, etc.). They will explain the importance of quality work in cabinet manufacturing processes and will complete all work so that it meets cabinetmaking industry standards.

2.6      Manufacturing Tech Systems

(Integration of Core Knowledge; Critical Thinking/Problem Solving)

Students will understand how current technology impacts the wood product manufacturing industry (tooling, managing, CIM, CAD/CAM). They will discuss current technology and apply it in the manufacturing of wood products.

Standard 4: Tools and Materials

2.7      Tools and Machines

(Integration of Core Knowledge; Critical Thinking/Problem Solving)

Students will understand the names, function, and safe use of  tools and machines (planes, routers, table saws, etc.) used in wood product manufacturing. They will identify the tools and machines used in wood product manufacturing and demonstrate ability to safely and accurately use them.

2.8      Materials and Supplies

(Integration of Core Knowledge; Critical Thinking/Problem Solving)

Students will know the names, properties, and appropriate use of manufacturing materials (wood, plywood, plastic laminates, adhesives, etc.) used in wood product manufacturing. They will identify manufacturing materials, discuss their properties and appropriate use, and demonstrate ability to safely use the materials to manufacture wood products.
