AQUATICS (SWIMMING/WATER POLO)

 

Course Title: Swimming/Water Polo

Department:  Physical Education

Grade Levels: 9-12

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

This course is designed to give students the necessary background to successfully compete at the high school level on either the swim team or the water polo team.  In swimming, students will become competent swimmers in any conditions (i.e. pool, lake, river, and ocean).  Students will become proficient in a number of strokes including freestyle, butterfly, backstroke and breaststroke.  Students will also show competency with their breathing patterns, reading flags, flip-turns, gun-start, relay start and will be able to tread water continuously for 15 minutes.  In water polo, students will concentrate on aspects of the game and how to work as a team.  Students will become proficient at five different types of shots on goal: regular overhand, pop shot, screw shot, backhand and roundhouse.  Students will also show competency in the eggbeater kick and be able to catch and throw with either hand in deep water.  Both courses stress building self-confidence in water conditions with the intention that students will become mentors to beginning aquatic students at some point during their high school career.

 

Length:  One Semester

Prerequisite:  Teacher/Coach recommendation.

Recommendation for Enrollment: A strong desire on the part of the student to participate in a sport at the high school level.

Type of Course: Meets PE graduation requirement.
