COURSE OF STUDY

 

Course Title: Advanced Band

Department:  Applied & Fine Arts    

Grade Levels: 9-12   

   COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

The purpose of this course is to develop artistic skills and knowledge, such as creating, performing, and producing as well as to develop critical analysis and aesthetic understanding of music.  Students will make interdisciplinary connections and study music in a historical and cultural context. Students will read, notate, listen to, analyze and describe music and other oral information, using the terminology of music.  All students will engage in active performance and provide a challenging regimen at all levels. Students will be using available technology to reinforce and enhance exploration and technical development as well as assist students in transcribing and composing music.

 

Length:  One year

Prerequisite for Enrollment: Two or more years of Band

Recommendation for Enrollment:  Teacher consent

Type of Course:  Elective.  College preparatory (UC/CSU), this course meets the Fine Art requirement

 

 

COURSE OUTLINE AND STANDARDS

Based on the California Performing Arts Standards

 

Students will be able to use an array of knowledge and skills to show competency in the following areas:

 

1.                   Communicate at a basic level in music, and clearly show knowledge of the use of music vocabulary, materials, tools, techniques, and methods of the music discipline.  (Critical Thinking; Integration of Core Knowledge)

2.                   Define and solve problems as they relate to music with insight, reason, and technical proficiency.  (Critical Thinking; Integration of Core Knowledge)

3.                   Develop, present, and analyze basic works of music from a historical, cultural, and structural perspective.  This skill also incorporates the ability to evaluate a variety of musical styles. (Critical Thinking; Integration of Core Knowledge; Effective Communication)

4.                   Be acquainted with exemplary musical works from a variety of cultures throughout history, and develop an understanding of the historical development of music across the arts. (Personal & Social Development; Critical Thinking; Meaningful Integration of Core Knowledge)

5.                   Mastery of the skills will enable students to gain the knowledge necessary to form their own artistic values and opinions for making artistic decisions. (Personal and Social Development; Critical Thinking; Integration of Core Knowledge).

 

 

INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS

 

1.      Daily written assignments addressing music theory, history, and composition

2.      Daily warm-ups and instruction (lecture)

3.      Assigned research projects

4.      Learning and performing pieces of music in class, the community, and during field trips.

5.      Weekly individual testing in front of the class.

1.      Daily Attendance and performance

2.      Individual reading, writing and oral assignments

3.      Attendance at performances

4.      Tests and quizzes
