Ms. Brown by Nancy Ponder

One of the newest editions to El Segundo High School is the self-exclaimed, "bubbly," Ms. Brown. Ms. Brown is the new art teacher. She graduated from the Glasgow School of Art. She was recently a teacher at the Weid Academy in Scotland. She came to El Segundo through a teacher exchange program, and switched places with Ms. Churchill.

Brown says that one aspect of El Segundo, and American culture in general, is the diversity and the "laid-back, happy atmosphere". "It's nice that there's such a cultural mix". The other characteristics of American culture that she is adjusting to is the traffic.

Her goal is to give her students an appreciation for art. "I want them to become much more visually aware." She wants her students to enjoy having her as a teacher and for this be an interesting experience for everyone. She also wants to test their abilities, by helping them to produce art that they didn’t think they were capable of.

Her interests are not limited to art, for example, she "dabbles", in sewing. She feels that it contributes to art if one is interested in other art forms. "You have to be aware that art covers a spectrum of things," she said.

Although she has not been at El Segundo for long, she has already made an impression on her students. Junior Porschee Funchess says, "I think that she's a really good teacher, and I wish that she wasn't leaving at the end of the year."

She finds beauty in the things that most people overlook. Her favorite artist is Charles Macintosh, because she appreciates the beauty in the buildings he designed.

After spending time with her it became evident that she really is the friendly and personable individual that she claimed to be. She is also thoughtful, which is evident by her desire to make this an interesting class. With an attitude like that she should be able to overcome her one fear of having a boring class. From everyone at El Segundo High School, welcome.
