Where The Art Is by Maryann

"I've been yelled at for
doodling in class before," says this month's featured artist, senior Kali Fontecchio. "But most of my teachers are just like
'Okay Kali, here's some paper. You can draw when you're done with your work.
Just don't draw on the desks,' which I don't. I'm not a vandal, I swear,"
says Kali very seriously.
This is because Kali is very serious
about her artwork. She has been drawing since age two, and any one who has ever
seen her artwork can verify that it displays years of expertise. "Most
parents give their kids a box of crayons or something to scribble with. I guess
I just happened to be good at it, and drawing is something that has stuck with
me ever since."
Not only has this hobby "stuck
with" Kali, but it has grown to be a passion, and a future career. She
draws every day, sometimes for hours on end, or maybe just for a few minutes,
but she never skips a day. She currently has a collection of 87 professional
markers which she has been collecting over the years. "There is an art store
next to the market, and every time my family goes shopping, I go over and buy
one new marker at four bucks a pop."
Kali is one of the most creative
students at ESHS (Her daily eye makeup alone is a work of art in itself). She
can draw just about anything she looks at, but she usually draws from visions
in her head.
She is in her third year of art class at ESHS (she took her junior year
off) and she is currently working on her portfolio since she plans to attend
Otis (an art school in
Kali also posts most
of her work on the internet. Her work can be found at k-sai.deviantart.com or

When asked why she loves drawing so
much, Kali responds with a little elvish smile,
"Because nobody can tell me not to draw something. I can draw whatever I
want, and there are no restrictions on it, unlike everything else in this
world."
