Honors 12 classes gets kicked into AP Language
By Jason Baker
El Segundo and the rest of California has been striving to produce advanced classes to better student education. These classes look great on college applications and make the high school career more enjoyable knowing that such a curriculum will be on it. But El Segundo High School decided not to produce one of these classes, the English 12 Honors.
To ambitious students of the 2004 class, English 12 Honors seems to be a fly by course without having the title of the regular English 12. But due to the lack of students enrolled in the 12 Honors class, Dr. Hart chose to send them packing into the AP Language course led by the almighty Dr. Gen. The students got pushed into the AP Language class found that they were enrolled in it on the day they picked up their schedules. Senior Christine Demuth stated, “This is so messed up, why am I not in English Honors. I think it is wrong that I had to read two books for English 12 Honors, and now I have to read two others.” In response to people complaining about the time they had to read their summer reading books, Dr. Hart and the faculty had agreed that the it would be wise to extend it by one week.
The AP Language class has proven to be fun but includes a lot of work, i.e. writing, and analysis. But the working becomes tedious after a while, especially if you have spent your entire high school career writing essays. Senior Saleha Bholat said, “I think it’s great because it is more challenging and with a great teacher like Dr. Gen, I know I will pass the AP exam.”
For the rest of the year the students can either drop the class and take regular English or deal with the various writing assignments and fun class environment that the all-powerful Dr. Gen provides.
