EDITORIAL//Seniors
Seniors, it’s the end to your mandatory schooling career. Thirteen years or more of childhood, growing up, friends, memories, experiences, crushes, heartbreaks, failures, and triumphs is finally coming to an end. For some, it’s a sad time of change and uncertain future, a time of relinquishing the security of their homes, family, and friends to take up the independent life of a college student. For others, it’s an exciting change from a life of stifling order and restrictions to freedom and independence. Nonetheless, for all seniors, the final few weeks of their final semester of their final year of high school is an exciting and anxious time.
The apprehension and anticipation caused by the culmination of graduation and the uncertainty of the future makes seniors – simply put – do stupid stuff. The most common lapse of judgment and expression of freedom that graduating seniors make is ditching. Seniors already know if they are or are not going to college and therefore their grades do not matter as much. Furthermore, with most finals already done, or for some AP’s over, they are virtually already finished with school. This, coupled with the belief that they are immune to punishment from the administration makes ditching appealing to many.
Another common transgression against the school’s “regime” that seniors commonly commit is bringing contraband items on campus. More times than not, seniors bring illegal substances onto campus and are caught with them. The “regime” comes down hard upon this and will deal out suspensions, suspend senior’s diplomas, and take away their privilege to walk.
A more common side effect of “senior-itus” that seniors display during the final few weeks of school is their general lack of enthusiasm, commitment, and concern toward the school. Responsibilities are forgotten and disinterest/apathy is widespread. However, in this case there is nothing that the “regime” can do about it since the mentality of their students is ultimately out of their control.
The bottom line is that it is important for the senior class to stay mentally awake during the last few weeks of school. Although they are almost done, the seniors still have a few crucial weeks left, so let us maintain whatever momentum is left and end the year on the highest note possible.
