Senior Spotlight: Megan Marie Roy

by Zack Roddy, Editor-in-chief

With her cherubic face and completely disarming demeanor, it's hard not to like Megan Roy on sight. When someone first meets Megan, many roles come immediately to mind: Student. Classmate. ASB President. But what many people don't take the time to see behind this seventeen year old is that she is a loyal and loving friend, and a very family oriented person, who has become involved in several commendable and diverse activities throughout the years.
Megan Marie Roy was born on July 8, 1989 in Inglewood, California, and now currently resides in Hawthorne. Although her parents divorced when she was a small girl, she feels blessed to have an even bigger family. " I have two stepparents making four different sides of my family," she says, "My family is big and it's so fun that way. I couldn't imagine growing up any other way. I have one older stepbrother named Brandon Baxter whom I have known since I was really young. He actually graduated here about two years ago. I'm pretty close to him, I don't even consider him my stepbrother...in my heart he's my blood. I also have an eight-year-old sister named Morgan. Sure she's a pain sometimes, but I love her to death. My family is my life and support system. I love them with all my heart."
This year will be Megan's fourth year at El Segundo High School, and her seventh in the district, arriving at El Segundo Middle School in the sixth grade. "I entered the district in 6th grade", says Megan, "… I was SO nervous!  But everyone was really nice and I made friends right away. I loved it." As each year progressed, Megan became more and more involved in school activities, including JV Cheer her freshman year, a member of the Homecoming parade, a Co Junior Lt. Governor last year, and now ASB President, which she marks as her greatest achievement, and currently one of the biggest parts of her life. "Once you get involved it really changes who you are. You are able to help people, your school, and it's just a good experience in general. It's something that will help me throughout life and is the biggest thing I think I will look back on and be the most proud of."
Becoming the President of the student body has also made a large impact on her life. "It has truly made me a better person. I think it gives you great skills not only in leadership, but communication, solving problems, organization...I could go on forever. I have already learned so much and I will take everything from this experience and apply it to my life both now and in the future." Megan sites her mother as her inspiration to run for the esteemed position, and as the person she admires the most. "Call me a mama's girl, but my mom is my number one role model and inspiration. I don't think I would be where I am today without her." She continues with, "She isn't like your average Mom, I can tell her just about anything. She set a great example for me since I was little. She is funny, fun to be around, and a great mother."
In her spare time, Megan enjoys the life of any teenager, including watching movies, listening to music, and especially hanging out with friends. She loves music of all kinds (except country), and Stand by Me is her favorite movie. " I like movies that make me laugh, those are the best." But most important to her are her friends, and among them are Seniors Brittney Peterson, Lali Snell, Megan Hunt, Stephanie Urrutia, Hana Lekow, Alex Heck, Tyler Murray, and Lacie Coburn. But her very best friend is Senior Mike Quinones. Friends since seventh grade, she describes him as, "My best friend in the world. He has been there for me since seventh grade and he has been the only person I can trust with anything since that time." She continues with, "He knows me so well, and he tells me when I'm doing something wrong, which I need sometimes. He honestly has made me a better person."
In the future Megan hopes to attend Pepperdine University or Loyola Marymount University in the hopes of becoming a Child Psychologist. Although an ambitious feat, Megan has clearly proven that she has the fortitude and ability to achieve it. Describing herself as, "A  very outgoing person who follows her dreams and loves to be around people she cares about more than anything", Megan Roy is bound to do great things in the future for herself, and for humanity. "Throughout High School I have learned so much about life...from friends to family to becoming the person I want to be. This is something I truly believe in, and try to apply to my life: Don't let anyone change who you are. Don't feel pressured to be someone your not, no matter what you face throughout life. Follow your heart and don't let obstacles get in the way of your goals and dreams."
