Tennis, Volleyball, and Swimming
By Spencer Green and Varun Roperia
Swim -
The El Segundo High School Swim Team has had an amazing season, with
many of the Eagles even making it to CIF Finals. Girls’ Varsity
ended with a perfect record of 6-0, and Boys’ Varsity had a record
of 3-3. The Girls’ Varsity team ended the season with a perfect
record, a Pioneer League dual meet title and a League Championship
rank. The Boys’ Varsity ended the season with a strong 5th
place title. In CIF, the Eagles were led by Michelle Saldana, Kailey
Makuta, and Mattea Perrotta. Other memorable CIF appearances came
from Jacque Combs, Courtney Rava, Julianne Allison. Also qualifing
for CIF was the boys’ 400 freestyle relay of Matt Pittluck, Scott
Cummings, Tyler Contarsy, and Jeff Volosin. Congratulations to the
Eagles Swim Team on a great season, and hopefully next season will
be as stellar as this one was.
Tennis -
For the Boys
Tennis team, the season has come to an end, and a sense of relief
can come over the student body in that they no longer have to suffer
any more tennis defeats for the rest of the year. Our final three
games against South Torrance, Beverley Hills, and Torrance resulted
in utterly predictable losses. After these losses, the team
apparently couldn’t pull it together, and were crushed again at both
Singles and Doubles League Finals. Obviously, the team needs some
work for next season. This travesty of a season might have been
brought about by a combination of both bad luck and the necessity of
additional practice. We have won only one match in the last three
seasons, and the current roster seems to be unable to do more at the
present time. Whatever the reasons, it must be decided what Coach
Kirby Onaga will do to ensure next season is not as painful as those
in the past have been. Of course, all is not lost. The majority of
the team is young, and the fact that we had any success is an
indication that as the team reaches its zenith, we will be able to
achieve far greater things. The Eagles’ will come back stronger next
year, and practice over the summer will prevent such painful losses,
hopefully leading us to a more successful season.
