Girls [Water] Polo Sweeps Through Early Season League Games
By Spencer Green, Sports Writer
Before school started back up, the Lady Eagles water polo team was
competing against other teams in the 32-team Orange County Shootout,
taking home the bronze after five tough games. The Lady Eagles’
first three games were victories, against the Pacifica Sea Dogs,
(15-0); Walnut High School, (9-6); and the Western High School
Pioneers, (10-0). After these three easy wins, the Eagles lost to
the Los Alamitos team, 9-2. This loss sent the Eagles to play for
the bronze award in the fifth game, which they won against the
Laguna Hills high School team in a sudden-death finish.
The day after school resumed,
Tuesday, January 9, the Eagles prepared to play in their home pool
against the Beverly Hills Normans. After four quarters, the Eagles
had proved their superiority with a 13-4 win. These scores were made
possible by senior Coral Kemp, with five goals; senior
Ashley Cordobes with four; junior Elle Quane with three;
and junior Chelsea Kemp with one. The Normans were barely
able to keep up with the Eagles, having to struggle in order to
score a single goal per quarter.
A week after their victorious battle
against Beverly Hills, the El Segundo girls traveled to Culver City.
This game was another notch in the Eagles water polo belt, as they
won, 11-6. These goals belong to Kemp and senior Rachel Jarvis,
each with three goals; Cordobes, Chelsea, and junior Jacque Combs
each had one goal; and Quane had two. This was the Eagles’ second
League game and second League victory.
The Lady Eagles’ third League game
took place on Thursday, January 18, as the water polo players
travels to Milken Community High School. This game was a victory for
the El Segundo players, as they won 14-3. Eight Eagles scored
against the Milken team, due to a team effort. These goals were due
to Coral, with five goals; Cordobes, with three; and seniors
Caitlin Briney, Amanda Schat, and Jarvis, and juniors
Madison Renfro, Quane, and Chelsea, each with one goal. This
victory put the Eagles as 14-3 in season, and 3-0 in League setting
the stage for a potentially perfect season.
The day after the Milken game,
Friday, January, 19, the El Segundo team set up their home pool for
a practice game against Crescenta Valley High School. While it was
only a practice game, the Eagles team still dominated against the CV
team. The final score was evidence enough of the successful Eagles
offense. The final score was 15-8, and it put the Eagles at 16-3 in
season, while being 3-0 in League.
The girls seem confident with their
playing, and one explanation for this sentiment comes from Cordobes:
“We’re a family this year and we are all really close and I think
that is what’s making our team come together this year.” Quane
shared similar feelings, but voiced them differently: “I think that
we’ll go to the moon and back.”
The Lady Eagles have been doing a
great job this year, and seem poised to sweep the League. Good luck
Eagles!
