Girls Soccer Rocks the League
By Leland Curry, Sports Writer
The Eagles have ended pre-season with a fantastic 11-2-1 record.
After fourteen amazing games the team has proven that they were
ready for the Pioneer League. With a record of 4 - 0 they have
already set a great pace for the rest of the season.
Their first game in the Pioneer
League was on January 9 against North Torrance. The Eagles started
slowly. The Saxons defense was good but the Eagles’ tenacious
offense finally broke through when Senior Tasha Anderson
scored a goal late in the second half to win the game, 1-0.
Their second game on January 11 went
fantastically with a final score of 3 – 0 against the always tough
Torrance High. This game was especially good for sophomore
Natalie Killinger who scored all three goals with the assistance
of Tasha Anderson and freshman Natalie Barbosa.
On January 16th the
team went to South Torrance High to play what Sophomore Camille
Kuebler says is “Definitely the most difficult team.” The game
showed that she wasn’t kidding. It was a very tiring game and by
the end of the second half the score was 1 - 1 with sophomore
Itchell Guzman scoring the goal to tie the game. Then the game
went into over time and then things really started to heat up. In
the end Barbosa scored the game winning goal and the Eagles left
once again victorious.
Their most recent game on January 18
against Lawndale went as expected with the Eagles winning 2 - 0. As
usual the girls dominated the field throughout most of the game. The
first goal was scored by Killinger with the help of Barbosa
in a move that caught Lawndale’s defense completely off guard.
During the second half, Lawndale strengthened their offense and came
close to scoring a goal. Luckily Senior Kellye Larsen stole
the ball and sent it across the field where Anderson scored the
second goal of the game.
With the Pioneer League well
underway, the girls’ soccer team has shown what they are made of.
With a great offense and fantastic defense the Eagles are ready for
whatever is thrown at them. It’s hard to imagine after seeing the
team now that when Coach Juan Mosquera started coaching nine years
ago the team lost to South 0 - 8. Thanks to all the hard work that
he and the girls have put in, there is no telling how far they will
get. So go to their next home game and support the Eagles as they
play Centennial on January 23.
GO EAGLES!
