Girls Basketball Beats Lawndale
By Dylan Coplin, Sports Editor
The Girls' basketball team has started off on the wrong foot. They
have only won one Pioneer league game with an 1-3 record. The girls
seem to be waiting for someone to put up all the points but no one
has stepped up.
The first league game against North
Torrance was a close game. Senior Taraneh Lipscomb lived up to her
expectations leading the team in points and rebounds. She had 11
points and 16 rebounds by the end of the game. Junior Abish Valdez
also played great, with 6 points and 7 rebounds. Leading the team
with 3 steals senior Sanna Malm also scored 11 points. The game was
gruesome until the fourth quarter when El Segundo outscored North.
The comeback did not work in their advantage because North was able
to hang on 39-49.
The second league game was against
Torrance. The game started off well for the Eagles, but they shortly
fell apart. Valdez had a solid game almost putting up a
double-double with 10 points and 8 rebounds. Sophomore Samantha
Heyman scored 13 points in game, leading the team. The team couldn't
keep up with the fast scoring and full court press of the Torrance
team. Lipscomb played good defense by grabbing 12 rebounds, but she
obviously cannot rebound over every player on Torrance. The game
ended with another El Segundo loss, 36-49.
The third league game the Eagles
faced off against South Torrance; the game was a blowout. The first
quarter El Segundo was down by 9, and ended up losing by 37 points.
The team played their normal game but South completely dominated the
offensive court. The El Segundo defense did not know how to play the
tough South team. The final score was 37-74 in favor of South.
The fourth game on January 19, the
varsity team faced off against Lawndale. The Eagles were off to a
great start in the first half. Valdez shot well and Malm hit a few
threes to give the Eagles a 7 point league at the end of 2 quarters.
In the second half, the Eagles completely shut down the Lawndale
offense. Lipscomb played tremendous defense, boarding over anyone
who came her way. The team forced passes that resulted in steals for
the Eagles. During the fourth quarter, the subs took over and it
seemed as though the Eagles were destined to win and they did,
62-46.
Now that the girls have won a
game in league, they should feel a bit more confident for the
future. Especially with Valdez and Malm shooting as well as they
did, they will surely do well this season.
