Athlete Spotlight: Taraneh Lipscomb
By Amanda Shoupe, Staff Writer
Taraneh Lipscomb has been playing basketball since she was in the
fourth grade. She has always loved the sport. She has also
experimented with volleyball but stopped playing in the sixth grade.
Lipscomb played basketball on a club team call Lady Titans for three
years. She always used to play everyday outside with her friends
Greg and Trevor, whom she could always beat.
When Lipscomb arrived to high school
she could not wait to try out for the team. When she tried out for
the basketball team, she made junior varsity. Lipscomb recalled,
"Freshman year I was on junior varsity and got pulled up to varsity
for CIF and it was the first game. Brittany Lane made a three
pointer with a few seconds left to take the lead. And win. The team
we played against thought that they were going to walk over El
Segundo" Lipscomb says. Her sophomore year she was moved to the
varsity team where she did well.
This year Lipscomb is a captain of
the varsity team. When asked about this year's season, she said, "We
had a rough start this season, trying to find chemistry within the
team; we played basically all championship teams in the pre season,
which was hard. Yet we always looked forward to the challenge
because we knew it would help us in the long run." She also said,
"with all our injuries this year it has been really hard and
frustrating but I thank my mom, Ashley Morris and Ashley Roberts for
listening and helping me get through it." Teammate and Senior
Natalie Robinson told us, "She is one of the smartest players and
she thinks well under pressure. As a captain she keeps everything
organized, and she is reasonable and dominates on the court." For
the future she wants play college basketball but she thinks it will
be a hard transition because of her height. She will go from a post
to a guard so it will be a challenge for her. Lipscomb says that she
is ready for the challenge. In college Lipscomb plans on majoring in
psychology, to become a psychologist or a sports agent.
Lipscomb says that her biggest
inspiration is her mom. Lipscomb says that she wants to do well and
become successful so that she can support her mother.
She also has some advice for girls
starting out with basketball, "Practice makes perfect, work on it
over time to be the best and remember nothing is impossible."
