Everyone knows about Christmas, Hanukah and Kwanzaa, but how many people recognize Virus Appreciation Day? Better yet, how many people know of its existence?  There are hundreds of bizarre and unknown American holidays, but it's never too late to start a trend.  These holidays give meaning to the little things in life; life doesn't revolve around the Pilgrims or practical jokes.  Life is about the sugar cookies, the hats, and running through puddles and splashing friends.  These holidays aren't useless or trivial; they show the fun side of America and also what we cherish the most: good times with family and friends, memories of our childhood, and the freedom to actually celebrate these crazy traditions that comes with our American citizenship.  How many people of communist North Korea get to celebrate National Kazoo day?
Traditional holidays are staples of American society and the thought of the vacations associated with them keeps us motivated during a hard test or stressful period in life.  Turkey and cranberry sauce may be eaten only a few times a year, but sugar cookies are eaten everyday all over America and those are the things that need to be celebrated in life.  Where would America be without the toilet? So, celebrate Thomas Crapper Day instead of St. Patrick's Day.  America can do without pinching and the color green for a day, but how many of us are prepared to not use our toilets for 24 hours and go "back to nature"?
The most important aspect of any society is its culture, the valued beliefs and traditions of a people. These traditions reflect each individual's unique traits, as well as the unifying characteristics which are shared by all. Holidays show  the items and ideas that are worth celebrating, appreciating, and recognizing.
Life is meant to be celebrated and enjoyed and there's nothing better than National Ice Cream Day in the blazing heat of July? Don't just explode confetti on New Year's Eve; explode it all the time.  The little things in life are the ones that matter, so don't hesitate to go nuts on National Yo-Yo Day!
