What is ... Hardcore Dancing?
By Neelofer Lodhy, Managing Editor

There are all sorts of ways of expressing yourself. Dancing to expressive music is one of those ways. There are also many different ways to dance, such as ballroom dancing, ballet, tap, you name it. There is one in particular that I want to talk about, and that is hardcore dancing. Yes, hardcore dancing is like the music genre of hardcore rock. Believe it or not, it is a way to dance, and has a history of different dance names/moves.
The history of hardcore dancing goes way back to the late 1990s, the years in which it became most common at shows. This type of dancing would be done at shows where hardcore and punk music would be played by local bands. Hardcore dancing came out especially from the east coast of the United States specifically from the New York and Boston hardcore scenes.
Hardcore dancing includes different 'dance' moves such as windmill which consists of the spinning of arms, spin kicks inspired by karate, and those are just two of the most common dance moves included in hardcore dancing. Another familiar type of hardcore dancing is the very common two step. Two stepping can be seen at almost every hardcore show. The two step, originally known as the Texas Two Step is described as being highly similar to the two step in break dancing. There are some that I have never even heard of; some have weird names too. These include the bucking wheel barrow known as the wild lawnmower, head walking, crab walking, and guerilla dancing. Junior Phu Pham's perspective of hardcore dancing is,"I really like it because it gets you pumped up and it's really exciting."
A good example of hardcore dancing can be seen in A.F.I' s video, the leaving song part II. I love watching people hardcore dancing because its so different, and it's amazing to see people in the pit of a show just let it all out and go to the music. It is the most interesting way of dancing that anyone could ever do, and if you do it well, then major props to you because it looks awesome. This hardcore world is the only one of its kind, and it's like nothing anyone has ever seen or heard before. I encourage kids to go out and dance at these hardcore shows because if you can go out there and do it, it's like a gift, you're highly skilled and only so many people can master this type of dance. Its not like it is difficult, but I'm sure it takes practice.
Some people could say hardcore dancing is dumb, cool, or whatever you choose to stereotype it, but like tap dancing, ballet, or even break dancing, I consider hardcore dancing an art as well.
