Volleyball: Working out Their Opponents

by Dylan Coplin

The volleyball team is doing wonderfully and as well as expected. They are currently 5-1 in Pioneer league and hold the second place spot behind North Torrance. The team was doing well until they lost against North Torrance, the number one team. Since the loss, they have had a winning streak of three games and are looking to keep it going till the end of the season.
Against Lawndale, the Eagles played the best they had played in a while. Even though they lost the game before against North, El Segundo really let Lawndale know they should start practicing more. Seniors Sarah Stutzel and Tara Hovland really took it to Lawndale. They each had 11 kills which improved the already outstanding score. With great scoring from each of the ladies, El Segundo easily beat Lawndale 3-0.
In the next game against South Torrance, the Eagles played their best and showed an excessive amount of skill against the lacking Torrance team. The first game was close; El Segundo only got the win by three points. With Hovland and Stutzel playing well again, and junior Melanie Palmer exceeding the limits in passing, the Eagles won the next two games solidly. Senior Kellye Larsen really played dazzlingly with nine saves throughout the whole match. She really helped the team out by preventing a few points against them. For her first year starting on Varsity, she plays like any other girls out there, who have been playing longer than her.
As for the game against Torrance, El Segundo completely murdered them quickly but painfully. The game went by so fast that I did not even have a chance to sit down and watch. Seniors Angela Covington, Hovland, and Stutzel played like normal but against the struggling Torrance team, they seemed like pros. Senior Jo'vine Tulikihihifo made so many blocks against Torrance, she was forced to sit and give Torrance a chance to get a few points. With the easy victory for the Eagles they advanced to the second place position in the Pioneer league.
Now since they are on a winning streak, after the North game, they are headed for North Torrance for their final match up against them. The Eagles are looking to win the game and hopefully stand a great chance to win in the playoffs. So far, the only difficult team is North, but upon beating them they will be very optimistic for playoffs this year.
