Girls Tennis: Lowered Expectations
by Evan Parker, Staff Writer
"We have to make up
for a lack of experience", says varsity tennis coach Kirby Onaga
about the girls tennis team. Girls' tennis has been flailing due to
a lack of experience this year, and with just three games in the
season to go at the record of 0-7, they will not be competing in CIF
this time around. But with all sports teams, there are periods of
restructuring. This year there are no seniors on the girls' tennis
team, leaving coach Onaga with no truly experienced players.
Their most recent face-off against South Torrance
resulted in a loss of 14-4 against the more experienced team.
Sophomore Amy Romeo is just about the only standout player here,
winning two out of three sets by a respectable margin in singles
play. Regardless, the team has lost seven straight meets. In doubles
play the team did not fare well either, resulting in one out of
three sets won in several matches.
One decision that will be affecting El Segundo Tennis
in the future is Measure Q. Soon to be voted on, if passed it will
replace the tennis courts here at El Segundo High with a swimming
pool and parking. Hopefully there will be some way to keep the
tennis courts as well as build the pool and parking lot. Tennis
players will be forced to practice at Recreation Park if the measure
is passed.
The girls' tennis team is definitely in a tight spot
this year, however much is expected of future teams. And seeing that
today is Halloween, here is a Halloween tennis joke! Where do ghosts
play tennis? … On a tennis corpse!
