While
the City Sleeps, We Rule the Streets
by Joshua Nuewsom, Editor
Released October 10th, Cobra's Starship's debut album While the City
Sleeps, We Rule the Streets rushed into stores for fans everywhere.
But when reading this most people may think, "Who or what is Cobra
Starship?" Formed by lead singer Gabe Saporta earlier this year,
Cobra is an indie group signed to Fall Out Boy's lead singer Pete
Wentz's record label, Fueled by Ramen. Remaining a solo artist until
the release of Myspace hit, "Bring it (Snakes on a Plane)", Gabe
quickly added new members. He first invited his friends from the
band The Ivy League, Alex Suarez to play bass and Ryland Blackinton
to play guitar. Next on the list was Elisa Schwartz on keytar (a
keyboard and guitar in one) and Armor for Sleep's drum tech, Nate
Navarro. Cobra Starship finally became a band instead of just
Saporta singing "Hollaback Boy", a spoof on Gwen Stefani's hit from
2005.
The CD has a unique sound, just like the group. It goes
from a weird acoustic melody to a techno dance beat. Being From
Jersey Means Never Having to Say Your Sorry, the album's opening
track makes the listener question why they bought the album to begin
with. It is slow, drown out and just plain annoying. The next song
Send My Love To The Dancefloor, I'll See You In Hell (Hey Mister DJ)
reminds you the 8 dollars you spent was worth it. It combines techno
beats and rock melodies almost perfectly. Another great song would
have to be The Church of Hot Addiction which has a sound that can
make anyone groove along with it in their car while stuck in
traffic. Perhaps the best song on the whole CD Bring it (Snakes on a
Plane) is the theme song to the summer flop Snakes on a Plane.
Featuring the lead singers from hit bands like Gym Class Heroes, The
Academy is… and the Sounds this song has a catchy chorus and sound.
Another song that is pretty catchy is the Ballad of Big Poppa and
Diamond girl which has a back up female vocalist that gives the song
a nice vibe.
Overall the whole CD was done really well. The only
downfall was mildly repetitive beats and lyrics. But some fans
thought it was a disappointment. Senior Brittany Crawford said, "I
was expecting ten more versions of Snakes on a Plane but you end up
getting Gwen Stefani's solo album sung by a guy". So if you're just
looking for a reprise of Snakes on a Plane then just download it off
of itunes but if you want some catchy tunes to move to go buy the CD
which is currently 9.99 at best buy.
