Fearing No Art

by Vanessa Durand, Staff Writer

A great scientist once said, "I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world" -Albert Einstein. Art is a gift that universally is never neglected; instead, it is celebrated and shared with all. LACMA, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art is now giving everyone the chance to create something that symbolizes meaning from one's self. LACMA's fifth exhibition entitled, "Consider This…" features a collaboration of art from Mark Bradford, Dorit Cypis, Margaret Honda, Philip Rantzer, Mario Ybarra, Jr., and Bruce Yonemoto as they portrayed how they have unleashed freedom by first releasing their internal creativity. What is amazing about this exhibit is that the museum encourages personal input by joining with other visitors. The activities include literally writing and drawing on the walls, observing and mingling with the artifacts, and questioning life in general. After contributing thoughts to the walls of the rooms, there is a station devoted to making personal collages. This is a great activity for the family or simply for one's self; providing the perfect opportunity to put together magazine and newspaper clippings that speak louder than words. The collages can either be taken home or left with the museum which makes the memories longer lasting and able to migrate and be shared with the next group of onlookers.  Finally, there are numerous things to do including watching a video of the artists involved and what this exhibit means to them, as well as viewing other rooms of art and objects without detailed summaries, thus providing you with the chance to form a new opinion and see the world in a different light. Located in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, this makes a great visit no matter what age or background and is free to the public on almost everyday of the week. This new method of art speaks that as humans, we all essentially share the same morals, emotions, and all have the ability to contribute to life and learn more about each other.

SUPERIMPOSED:

“A musician must make music, an artist must paint, a poet must write if he is to be ultimately at peace with himself. What one can be, one must be.”  -   Abraham Moslow
