I Grew Up a Nick Kid Too!
By Vanessa Durand, Staff Writer
The stresses of life as a teen can be overwhelming to the point
where we often day dream of our past. Our past as children and what
made us the happiest and with the most care free feelings towards
the busy world we never knew of.
The late 90s and early 2000s were a time of new fashion,
artists, and even television shows. The old Nickelodeon shows were
sure to brighten any child’s smile as they saw their favorite series
play everyday. Nickelodeon replayed classics such as Are You
Afraid of the Dark? Doug, Rugrats, Solute Your Shorts, and
Figure it Out. These shows either gave you the goosebumps with
their realistic haunted stories or left you guessing what kids had
invented to make useful in their everyday lives. Shows such as
Figure it Out included a panel of nickelodeon celebrities who
were to guess what a certain kid had created. Other shows like
All That, were similar to a Saturday Night Live for
adolescents. Each episode included skits and parodies that would
poke fun at certain characters on the show. Kenan and Kel was
the hilarious comedy about two friends who wound up in mischief
around the house of their parents and at the convenient store in
which they worked. ESHS alumna Erica Roach states, “It’s
always fun going back down memory lane and remembering those classic
shows we all grew up on. They were truly life changing.”
Other classic shows included The Secret World of Alex
Mack based upon the story of a girl that could turn into a
liquid blob at any given time due to a chemical spill. We can also
recall Clarissa Explains it All, and Legends of the Hidden
Temple. Rocko’s Modern Life, CatDog, and Double Dare
were as well among the happy and exciting shows to air daily. Since
Nickelodeon thrived on collaborating childhood favorites with family
fun, these many different types of shows range from interactive
family game competitions to wallabies who had a cow as a best
friend. Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, Ren and Stimpy and so many
others are memories that most of still remember and bring joy to us
once again.
