Do the Holidays Mean Anything Anymore?
As
the holidays approach, we are all overcome by the holiday frenzy.
Numerous shopping trips to the mall and grocery store, waiting in
long lines at the post office, and crazy relatives are a common
issue during the holidays.
The real meaning of the holidays is
now taking a backseat. Gifts and presents, sales, and food have
taken place of the ideals behind Chanukah, Christmas, Eid, and
Kwanzaa. The point of the holidays is to spend time with those you
love, not those sales you love. A long time ago, families were
portrayed as happy and loving during the holidays, and the season
was dedicated to spending time with family. The average family
during the holidays is now portrayed as one in which the parents are
constantly working and the children must prepare dinner for
themselves, finishing in time for a one hour dinner with their
parents before running off to their rooms to play video games and
watch the OC marathon on television.
People today are so consumed by the
material aspect of the holidays that they completely forget to
schedule time with their families, and this is no more evident than
with today's teens and their parents. With the modern teen now
committed to causes, working and studying, and driving their own
cars, they are now spending less and less time at home, and any time
spent is awkward and short. Children, however, are not the only ones
to be blamed. Parents are also working more than ever before to be
able to keep up with their lifestyles and the rapidly rising cost of
living standards. Is there a solution? Yes, less materialism. Will
this happen? Probably not. But what are you gonna do? It is the
holidays. |
