Girls Water Polo
By Spencer Green, Sports Writer
The girls' water polo season began as the boys' season ended. On
November 21, the boys' water polo team ventured to Belmont Plaza to
play Cerritos High School in the CIF Finals game. This incredible
game showed the Eagles at their finest as they fought Cerritos goal
for goal, all the way up through the second overtime. But the Eagles
were unable to dominate the Dons, and the game ended at a 13-12
loss. The amazing game left the Eagles on a high note as they
finished up their season in second place.
Two days before the boys' game, the
girls' polo team had their Midnight Madness at the Plunge. This
event started off their '06 season. The day after the game, the
girls had a home scrimmage against Redondo. Eight days later, the
girls returned to the Plunge for a practice game against Peninsula.
These early games gave the girls' team a taste of the competition
they would soon face.
From November 30 through December 2,
the Varsity girls traveled to Newbury Park for a three-day
tournament. Winning four out of five games, the girls' polo squad
placed second in the 24-team tournament. The Eagles beat Morro Bay
14-3, Pacifica of Oxnard 6-5, Harvard Westlake 7-2, and Ventura 8-4.
The only defeat the girls encountered was from the Cabrillo High
School Conquistadores from Lompoc. Congratulations to the girls for
their high ranking in the tournament!
Upon being asked how her team was
doing, senior co-captain Coral Kemp said, "I'm pretty sure the team
is the best it's ever been, and we're going to desecrate every other
team we encounter! Amen." Junior Chelsea Kemp answered the same
question by saying, "I'm really excited how the season is turning
out." Senior Jenna Johnston said, "Basically, we're pretty amazing,
and everybody should come watch us."
A week after the Peninsula game, the
Eagles traveled back to their home pool to play Louisville. The
December 5 game opened up with early goals by Coral along with
juniors Jacque Combs and Elle Quane. The first quarter ended at 5-0,
with Louisville trying to catch its breath. As the whistle blew and
second period started, Combs slammed another goal home. Soon after,
Louisville began to fight back, getting two consecutive goals of its
own. But Coral was unstoppable, getting two more goals of her own.
The third quarter saw the final scoring of the game, with Quane and
junior Carissa DeSalles scoring a goal each, and Louisville scoring
two as well. The game ended with an 11-4 Eagles victory. In the end,
Coral had five goals, Quane had three, Combs had two, and DeSalles
had one.
On December 12, a week after the
Louisville game, the girls headed to La Serna High School. This game
ended with a 10-3 Varsity Eagles victory. The Varsity scorers were
Quane, Combs, and Coral with three each, and senior Rachel Jarvis
with one.
Good luck to the girls’ water polo
team, and have a great season!
