Boys Basketball Does Well On The Road
By Dylan Coplin, Sports Editor
The
boys' team came out swinging in the Serrano tournament this year.
They played some pretty amazing teams and went 3-1 in the
tournament. They lost in the final game against Serrano; a stronger
and much better team than the Eagles.
After the Serrano tournament, El
Segundo hosted their own tournament that included some of the best
teams in the South Bay. This year the Eagles faced Brentwood,
Kennedy, Santa Monica, and Mira Costa. Each team was very skilled
and a good opponent for the Eagles. First off was Brentwood; the
Eagles and Brentwood came out even in the first half with junior
Kevin Ryan playing phenomenally down in the paint. Senior Darko
Stojanovic was out for the game from a technical foul from the
previous game. Even with Stojanovic out, junior Rechad Nessary
played well. But it was not enough for the Eagles, after the half
Brentwood took a quick lead after a few fouls from El Segundo. Those
few points defined the rest of the game because El Segundo only lost
43-54.
The second game of the tournament was
against Kennedy High School. This was a completely different game
from the day before. Stojanovic started this game, debuting in the
tournament. He played a solid game by getting defensive rebounds.
Ryan played very well against the smaller Kennedy team. The game was
ended on a good note with the Eagles winning 44-41.
The third game of the tournament was
a big one for the Eagles. If they lost this game they would not be a
contender to go to the finals. Senior Adam McAtee knew that he had
to step up big and score a lot of points. The game was against Santa
Monica, and both teams were ready to play a good game. McAtee played
tremendously with 15 points overall, scoring five 3-point shots.
Even with the Eagles offense looking so strong, the Santa Monica
team played even better defense. The final score of 44-53 was a
crushing loss to El Segundo.
The fourth game was against Mira
Costa. McAtee had trouble figuring out what to do against the 1-3-1
defense, and Ryan was limited to 6 points and 3 rebounds. Sophomore
Terrance "Sippy" Wilson made a big appearance in the first quarter
backing up the struggling McAtee. Wilson played well for his first
big appearance, and is looking to get more playing time as the
season progresses. Wilson also played great on the other side of the
court by stopping and dominating Mira Costa's offense. The game
ended sadly with a loss to the Eagles, 20-46.
So far on the road, El Segundo has
played very well with a 3-1 start, including an opening over time
game against Silverado. At home, it looks as they are struggling a
bit but it should turn around by the time the season rolls out. It
looks like El Segundo has another good team and a playoff contender
of their hands.
