If You Still Need Nightlights
By Liana Magliocco, Staff Writer
As
the New Year inches closer the need for independence is more
prominent. Everyone wants to change and be different, but in reality
most people are too hesitant. Most people think "Oh it's 2007 now,
now I'll focus in school, now I'll go on that diet" but people,
especially teenagers won't do something unless they have to be told.
The purpose of growing up is to evolve, to learn and to accept
change. High school is only four years of our lives and yet we act
like were still in middle school. How can we except to be taken
seriously if we can't make our own decisions? As high school
students its expected of us to be mature and to think outside of our
boxes. We all have brains why not us those for our own benefit.
"If people act like grown ups,
chances are you'll be treated as one," says junior, Patty Evans.
Life is a "pay now, play later" concept. Sure people can goof off
and not take what opportunities they have handed to them seriously,
but when you think about it, because high school is only four years
shouldn't you pay attention? To elaborate if a student focuses on
schoolwork, does well and gets good grades they can go to a good
college, when you go to a good college and do well there, you can
get a good job. And as many adults will say, if you get a good job,
and enjoy it, you will ultimately enjoy life better. So compare four
to ten years of hard work to a lifetime of doing what makes us
happy. Doesn't it seem like school really is worth it? If you want
responsibility, show it. Your schoolwork reflects how eager you are
to be your own people.
If people honestly sit down and study
for a test that shows you're willing to do what it takes to have the
upper hand on that test. Another lesson in life, if you want
something, and work at it, you normally get it. Friends are another
influence on people. Don't depend on friends for life; make sure you
can live without them. Having friends is just a bonus in life, but
if you can make it alone, you can make it with practically anyone.
On the other hand as much as we'd
like to believe that we can do everything on our own, we can't.
Parents pay for us, give us food and shelter, and in many cases are
our main source of transportation.
So next time when thinking "I could
do this all by myself", think again. Parents help us in so many
ways, even if it doesn't seem like it now; they are setting us up
for life. Not to mention teachers who basically spend their whole
day making sure we're ready to go out in the world. Listen to them,
they are teachers for a reason, they say the things they to better
our outcome in the real world.
