Art with an Open Mind
By Vanessa Durand, Staff Writer
The holidays present a wonderful opportunity to relieve
stress from school, work, and allow quality time to be spent with
those you love most. Since it's the most beautiful time of the year,
family and friends are essential when celebrating these joyous
times. This year, spice up your holiday by trying something new,
broadening your horizons, and practice spontaneity. Art is a
fantastic way to accommodate the interests of the different people
that surround you. Kick off the new year by spending high quality
time at refreshing locations such as The Getty Museum.
In addition to their own collection,
The Getty hosts many temporary exhibits. Such displays include,
'Where We Live: Photographs of America.' Here, Nancy and Brice
Berman portray their collection of photography from over a 15 year
period. They tell the story of their view of life in the United
States while capturing every day themes such as variations in
lifestyles, scenery, possessions and pastimes. In black and white,
literally, one can examine the treasures of 'Public Faces/Private
Spaces: Recent Acquisitions.' From now until February, photographs
from artists Mary Ellen Mark, Bill Owens, Anthony Hernandez, and
Donald Blumberg can be found at the museum. These committed American
photographers have united to observe what The Getty states as, "the
people and places that define community…responding to the genres of
portraiture, street photography, and social documentation."
An interesting yet unique exhibit is
one by the name of: 'Tumultuous Assembly: Visual Poems of the
Italian Futurists.' This eye catching display features art that
expresses the changes of the modern world and how they have
transformed the concepts of the human psyche due to cultural
changes, inventions, science and technology. Lastly, another
showing not to miss is 'Classical Connections: The Enduring
Influence of Greek and Roman Art.' Until 2008, this is where one
can see the work of ancient sculptors, painters, glassblowers and
jewelers. This is an exciting way to view the genius ideas of the
past and interpret them into ideas of enlightenment. After learning
about these exhibits on display, senior Claudia Maria Rebora states,
"I want to go! Sign me up!"
Whatever one decides to do, this is
sure to be a fun way to enjoy the holiday atmosphere that celebrates
happiness, peace, and creativity.
