Ms. Wilson: A New Arrival
By Josh Newsom, Editor

Some reading this may be asking themselves this question: Who is this Ms. Pam Wilson? The answer: the high school’s newest addition to the English department. Ms. Wilson accepted a job as the English 12 and one of the AP English Language teachers when Ms. Hughes resigned. But being a teacher is only part of what Ms. Wilson is; the rest requires a little more reading.
Born in West LA, Ms. Wilson is a true product of the 80s. To this day, she listens to bands like Poison, Thin Lizzy, Pin Back, and ACDC. Also, she used to be really into punk rock. As a former student at nearby University High School, Ms. Wilson was the classic over achiever. She best describes herself as "obnoxiously involved". She was on the high school's newspaper, orchestra, amnesty club, and varsity tennis and soccer. As a child, Miss Wilson was as happy as a squirrel but describes her teen years as a period of angst and rebellion. But she was not able to get away with too much since her mom was a teacher at the high school. Growing up couldn't be too bad for Ms. Wilson if her parents are the people she looks up to the most. She describes her mom as very sweet and the counter part for her dad, who was British, sarcastic and always getting on her case, which she says was good for her.
After high school, Ms. Wilson attended Boston University. One of the best memories she can recall from it was "Seeing snow and jumping in a pile of it". After graduation and Europe, she went for her masters at Loyola Marymount University. She graduated this past May and just cannot help but to remember the amazing professors.
Ms. Wilson is very enthusiastic about teaching. She said there were several reasons why she became a teacher. One main reason was to get to discover the untapped intelligence of her students. "Even though I appear to be strict I really love teenagers and I feel I can learn a lot from them".
So what made her choose El Segundo High School? "I love that El Segundo is a small community…it has a wonderful reputation and I wanted some way to give to the community." Ms. Wilson says she really enjoys being at the school and getting to know the students. She also empathizes with her students because of the hard transition of switching learning styles in the middle of the semester but thinks that it is getting a little bit easier each day. Senior Kirk Sobject said, "She's done a really good job at adapting to ESHS. She also has really interesting, fun lessons…she even says 'redic'!"
Currently Miss Wilson occupies her time with museums, among other activities. "I love art so I'm constantly exploring new styles". She also enjoys traveling and has lived in New York, Boston and London. Her favorite shows, when she can watch them, are Arrested Development, Reno 911 and The Office (BBC version). She enjoys listening to dance, afro beat, salsa and classic rock. Her all time favorite movies are Rushmore and Waiting for Guffman and her guilty pleasure is Star magazine. She says, "Sometimes you need a little break".
If anyone sees Miss Wilson with her students, they know that she wants them to thrive. "[In the future] I want to see all the success my students have". Senior Dana O'Rourke says, "She really does care about her classes". El Segundo is lucky to have a teacher who talks with great passion about her students. Hopefully Miss Wilson will be with ESHS for a long time.
