Welcome Mr. Wheeler
By Kim Keener, Staff Writer
There is nothing like walking into a senior English class and seeing
the smiling face of Mr. Wheeler. Though new to ESHS, he is certainly
not new to the Los Angeles area. Born and raised in a big family
with dozens of cousins in Manhattan Beach, Mr. Wheeler has always
loved the feel of a small town. A University of California at Santa
Barbara alumni, his love for California kept him near his birthplace
when he left for college.
While passionate about writing, Mr.
Wheeler has not always felt that being an English teacher is the
right career for him. Originally an aquatic biology major, Mr.
Wheeler soon changed in favor of his true calling, English. Once in
the English department he had an epiphany, and the result was the
"best classroom experience of his life."
Mr. Wheeler describes his move to
English as, "I pulled up stakes and pitched camp in the English
department."
Mr. Wheeler was very active in high
school, participating in such activities as skateboarding, surfing,
snowboarding, and music with an affinity for the drums. An avid
music fan, Mr. Wheeler believes that "iTunes has killed the music
industry."
However, music was not as physically
damaging as his other hobbies; after a broken wrist, snapped radius,
and a split-open head, Mr. Wheeler is less aggressive but still very
active. This perseverance is admirable, for many people would have
quit after injuring themselves that badly. While continuing his
high school activities, Mr. Wheeler has recently added more hobbies
to his already long list. Some of these are traveling, beach
volleyball, basketball, and seeing the doctor.
Mr. Wheeler's advice for anyone who
is struggling in English is to, "Read! Write! Keep a diary, scan the
cereal box, read comic books, surf mags… anything that has to do
with reading and writing!…listening to the band Bad Religion did
more to broaden is an intelligent athlete that we, as students, are
privileged to learn from. Good Luck Mr. Wheeler!
