Spotlight: Devon Samantha Maloney
By Zack Roddy, Editor-in-chief
When people first meet Devon Maloney, they immediately associate her
with her participation in drama and choir. But despite her obvious
talent in these two fields, Devon has also shown great versatility,
including dabbling in other student activities, as well as being a
very fun and family oriented person, with big plans ahead in her
future.
Devon
Samantha Maloney was born December 22, 1988 in Redondo
Beach, California. Her parents are Kevin and Beverly, and she has a
younger fifteen year old brother named Ian as well. When asked how
long she has been attending schools in the district, Devon replied
with, “All of them...13 then?! Jeez…” Now a senior in high school,
Devon has completed a wide arrangement of activities in her four
years, including Academic Decathlon, ComedySportz (a comedy improve
league), the ESHS Coral Program, the Recreation & Parks Theatre
Dept., a job at Chili’s Restaurant, and, in Devon’s own words,
“slaving years of my life away as a student.”
When inquired of
who her role models are, Devon had this to say about her parents,
“I’ve always been a big fan of my parents, as weird as they can be
sometimes. I’ve never met another mom who dances around the house,
singing along to Audioslave and the Chili Peppers, and I highly
doubt that anyone in the world makes a more perfect bologna sandwich
than my dad. I hope I never take having such a cool family for
granted.”
When asked to
describe her proudest moment, Devon responded with, “When I got my
first college acceptance letter, I just about exploded with
happiness”. She goes on to say, “All those years of hard work had
finally paid off, just as I had hoped. And yeah, knowing that I
wouldn’t have to work at Chili’s for the rest of my life was a plus,
too.”
In her
spare time, despite her busy schedule, Devon still tries to enjoy
the life of every teenager, including every teen’s favorite pastime.
“I’ve become very fond of naps, does that count? (laughs) Well,
otherwise, I love movies and books. And spending all my money on
coffee.” In the fall of 2007, Devon plans on continuing her higher
education at Boston University, and while she is uncertain where
that future will take her, she is optimistic that it will lead her
somewhere prosperous. “I plan on attending Boston University in the
fall. I’m declared as an International Relations major, but that’s
probably going to change a few times! I’m not sure what I’d like my
career to be, but I plan to help improve the way we communicate with
one another, whether it’s between countries, groups, or individuals.
I believe that miscommunication is one of the most pressing issues
in the world, especially in this day and age.”
As the
interview concluded Devon left this inspiring quote for all the high
school students that she will be leaving behind, “ I suppose the
most important thing to know is not to stress over the
little things. It may seem like a catastrophe now, but I’ve learned
that overreacting will only get you frazzled nerves and nothing to
show for them. Will this really matter in five years? Ten? Try to
focus on the big picture, because that’s what truly deserves your
passion.”
Devon Maloney
has been a great contribution to El Segundo High School for her
ability to be laid back, and a hard worker at the same time. She is
sure to be a great asset to society in the future, and we should all
expect to remember her name.
