Swimming Splashes Toward End of Season
By Spencer Green, Sports Editor

As the 2007 Swim Season draws to a close, the El Segundo team prepares for League Prelims, which are to place next week. With only two league meets left, including one this afternoon, the Eagles boys and girls are ready to finish their season.

Overall, the girls’ Varsity team has a league record of 4-0, and boys’ Varsity is at 2-2. The most recent meet was on Thursday, April 19, at El Segundo’s’ home pool, the Plunge. The El Segundo Eagles swam against the North Torrance Saxons. All of the El Segundo squads won, and the boys’ Frosh/Soph team got their first win. The Varsity boys’ won at 114-46, and girls’ won 135-34. Frosh/Soph boys’ won 90-22, and the girls’ team won 102-25.

The next, and last, two meets are set to be against Beverly Hills and South Torrance; both meets take place away from El Segundo. The Beverly Hills meet is today, Wednesday, April 25, and the South Torrance meet is Thursday, April 26.

Several swimmers have been consistently winning their events. Sprinting the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events were senior Joey Gumina and freshman Max Reynolds. Senior Coral Kemp also swam in the 100 yard Freestyle. Competing in the 100 yard Butterfly were senior Tyler Contarsy and freshman Julianne Allison. Junior Kailey Makuta swam in the 200 yard and 500 yard freestyle events. Sophomore Michelle Saldana swam the 100 yard Breaststroke event. Junior Chelsea Kemp and sophomore Sinith Markalande both swam the 200 yard Individual Medley events, with Chelsea also swimming the 100 yard Backstroke.

As senior Jeff Volosin said, “Being coached by Fotis (Davlantis), Marcus (Lubba), and Riley (Brady) was a very positive experience.” Junior Woody Lindsey was also positive about the season, saying, “I’ve had a really great time, and it’s been fun swimming with my friends.” Senior Caitlin Briney felt the same way, saying, “Swimming has been fantastic, because it’s with your friends.”

For the El Segundo swimmers, the end of the season is in sight. With only League Finals remaining, all they have to do is sprint the last few yards home.
