Baseball Starts the Season Undefeated
By Dylan Coplin, Sports Editor

The baseball team has gotten off to a great start in the Pioneer league. The first three games of the season ended up as wins which put them in first place overall in their league.

The first league game was against Centennial. The Eagles gained a 5-run lead in the first inning. They held on to the lead for two more innings then lost it due to Centennial getting 5 of their own runs. Centennial played a good game, but their pitching was not good at all. They allowed 14 runs in only 10 hits. Senior Jeff Dorman and freshman Michael Bundy both stole 2 bases each. Senior Jeff Miera hit the ball three out of the four at bats during the game. He scored 2 runs. Senior Mike Quinones also had a phenomenal game, with 3 runs scored, 4 RBIs, and 1 homerun. The Eagles came back after the 3rd inning to win the game 14-7 over Centennial.

The second game against Centennial was a blowout in favor of El Segundo. Quinones pitched a great game against Centennial, only allowing one run the whole game. He added seven strikeouts throughout the game as well. Seniors Bobby Dugan and Dorman both had a stolen base, while drawing 5 runs in together; Dugan with 4, and Dorman with 1. Dugan had the best hitting game overall for the Eagles batting .667 and hitting a homerun. The game was an obvious blowout win for the Eagles, 11-1.

The most recent game for the Eagles was against Torrance. The Eagles started the game off well with 3 runs in the first inning and one run in the third. But during the fourth inning, Torrance rallied and scored 5 runs to gain the lead. With only a few innings left, the Eagles had to get a few of their own runs back from Torrance. At the end of the 7th inning, their last chance, the Eagles stepped up and tied the game. Coming back in the game and tying it up was hard because of the Torrance pitcher. He had a hard fast ball and was very accurate. Luckily the Eagles caught a break and he got pulled out of the game. The Eagles won the game in the 10th inning by one run. The final score was 9-8.

With the Eagles start, it looks like they will be a contender again for the CIF title. Last year they were runners-up in the championship game. If they keep on winning, they will definitely have a exceptional season.
