The Lady Eagles Take the Plunge!!!

On Wednesday March 6, the 2002 El Segundo Eagle Swim Team took to home water at the Urho Saari Swim Stadium for their first dual meet of the season. The Eagles proved that even adverse practice conditions couldn't slow them down. Their guests, Lakewood High School, couldn't keep up with the Eagles' superior swimming ability. This year the El Segundo swim team has a record number of swimmers, 73 in all. Of those 73, there are 40 ladies. This makes for one very overcrowded pool. However, this didn't seem to bother your Lady Eagles!

Outstanding Varsity performances were turned in by several of the Varsity swimmers. Junior Kamille Kemp, had an impressive first place finish in the 500-yard freestyle. Kamille was also a key ingredient in two first place relay teams. Senior Courtney O'Donnell won both the 50 and 100-yard freestyle sprint events. Courtney was also a key participant in two first place relay teams. Junior Martine Yemma won in the 100-yard breastroke. Senior Gemma Gaudio was also a fierce competitor in the breaststroke. Junior Nicole Parsonault was victorious as the ladies' number one 100-yard butterflier. Sophomore Katy Lawlor swam the very difficult 200-yard individual medley event and racked up another Eagle victory. Senior Jana Wianecki turned in a stellar performance, scoring two second place individual sprint finishes for the Eagles, as well as, participating on a winning relay. Junior Berlyn Montomery also sprinted for the Eagles in the 50 and 100 freestyle. Junior Kourtney Schepman, a distance swimmer, won the 200 yard freestyle, and came in second in the 500. Kourtney also swam anchor on the victorious 200 free relay team. Senior Desiree Gant and junior Alissa Volosin also contributed points for the team in the distance swims.

The meet was a very encouraging start to what promises to be a great season for your Lady Eagles Swim Team. Last weekend the El Segundo Swim Team participated in the Los Amigos Relay meet in Fountain Valley. The Eagles placed 7th out of 30 teams in the co-ed meet, improving from their 8th place finish last year. Your Lady Eagles are looking forward to their six upcoming meets in the competitive Bay League.ipant in two first place relay teams. Junior Martine Yemma won in the 100-yard breastroke.
