The war against terrorism is on its seventh month anniversary, but where is the war leading and are we progressing towards a better community where terrorist attacks will no longer haunt us? President Bush is deciding on changes to the nuclear weapons policy. As stated by Bush, the nuclear arsenal is to serve as a deterrence and to make it clear to nations that they will not threaten the United States or use weapons of mass destruction against our allies. However, if we make nuclear weapons for our protection and use them against other nations, there is a high chance that those other nations that we plan to hit with these weapons will try to protect themselves and spur them to make nuclear arsenals themselves. Therefore, we have not solved a problem, we have provoked it.
Does
our government really know the risks that are involved in changing old
policies? President
Bush said that our goal is to threaten nations against the use of weapons
of mass destruction. Yet we
can use these weapons against others.
Once again we are playing God and yet it just might bring us into a
situation that we cannot handle. Changing
our nuclear policy is not helping. It is leaving us open for someone to react out of fear and
strike us again, and it is possible that another attack can occur which
would be even more devastating and life threatening than what happened on
September 11th.
The
actions that are being taken by Bush are not benefiting American society
by making small nuclear bombs that are going to be drop on the axis of
evil because he is leaving us open for another attack of a greater
magnitude. Are we ready to
suffer the consequences of our President’s decisions? Senior Brandon Roque said, “To drop nuclear bombs on
another country is crazy because you destroy everything and we just want
to destroy the enemy, not their entire civilization.” Will this procedure really produce the revenge many Americans
want, and will it save us from future attacks?
It is apparent that we are trying to get back at those that have
hurt this country over the years. However,
using nuclear bombs is not the right way.
Those who lost their loved ones on September 11 are heartbroken.
When Osama Bin Laden struck against
us, we lost many innocent people.
The same would occur if we were to attack a nation, but it would be
worse if we were to use nuclear weapons and destroy more innocent people.
This is obviously not the best way to retaliate against those that
have struck against us. Plus it is also very clear that there are more direct ways to
defeat our enemies without causing more chaos than there already is.
