ESHS Construction Update

Summer went by so quickly, and now that we're back in school, we have to adjust to an earlier schedule. Most of us are still trying to get used to the idea of having to get up at the crack of dawn. Getting back into our normal school routines hasn't been easy, and having to take even longer routes to get to our classes hasn't made it any easier. Yes, unfortunately, the construction is still going on, and it will not be completed for at least a few more months. At least that's what they are telling us. Hopefully if construction remains on schedule, which it has been, our main building should be open by late November. According to Dr. Hart, electric, plumbing, heat and air are almost complete.

Quite a bit of work has been done over the summer. I remember driving by the school during summer and noticing the new windows that had been installed. They look very nice and give the school a more traditional look. "The dark windows were noise reducers paid for by LAX when jets got so loud, but the look was not historic", Dr. Hart stated. We haven't really gotten a good glimpse of the inside quite yet, but there is a tour day scheduled for November 3. If all goes as planned, we should be able to move in Thanksgiving weekend. If for some reason there is any delay, the move in date will be pushed back to Winter Break. We went through quite a bit last year trying to deal with all of our heavy books and the problem of having to travel to and from the district for our language and math classes. Everyone has been handling it very well, but we are all just about ready to move in now. Senior Holly Poon replied, "I hope the school reopens on time because I hate walking around the buildings to get to class." It would be nice to have our lockers and the main hall back. Especially for those of us who are seniors and are spending our last year without lockers.

After this construction phase has passed, we plan to move onto phase two in January or February. A new Bond Measure will be decided in November election, and if it gets passed, we will be able to move onto phase two. This means that the buildings to the right and left of the main building will begin to be worked on. The portables will remain where they are for construction purposes until the buildings are completed. "I'm am really looking forward to the re-opening of the school. It will be nice to be able to walk through the halls once more before we graduate," said senior Tania Arrayales. We should all try to keep an optimistic attitude about the construction and just hope that everything goes as planned. It must be hard for the incoming freshman this year because of all that has been going on. Without the main hall, freshmen are unable to meet all the upper classmen and get to know everyone a little better. I have noticed that I don't even see a lot of people anymore because we don't have a common route. Before everyone used to take the main hall to get to class. Now everyone's either running to the district or sprinting around the main building to get to their next class. A major part of being in high school is meeting new people and with everything that has been going on, we have been unable to do so.

They should wait a little while before phase two begins just to give everyone a break because I know I'm sick of hearing all that noise outside while class is in session. Ending on a positive note, let's try to make the 2001-2002 school year a great one. It should get better once we're moved in and everything settles down.
