The Staff Behind Our Memories

“It's a big job, but somebody has to do it,” says Mrs. Stucken, Yearbook advisor of ten years, when speaking of her feelings about advising the production of the Annual. Each year in June, we receive these wonderfully crafted books filled with memories from our entire year. These mementos will probably be kept far into our old age, and will be gazed upon by our children with laughter as they see the way life was in high school. Annuals are a way of documenting one of the most precious times of our lives- high school, a time of growing, learning and maturing. But the truth is, when most people receive these beautiful books, few take the time to stop and think about how much work, time, and effort went into the making of the Yearbooks.

At the beginning of the year, the Yearbook staff has to coordinate all the aspects of the book and decide upon everybody's role. Pages are then divided up amongst the staff and each person must find pictures, layout, and complete any necessary typing for their page. This must be finished before a designated deadline. The book is divided into sections and each section has its own deadline. Senior, and Co-Editor of the yearbook staff, Matt Ashtiani says, “The hardest part about running a yearbook staff is meeting deadlines. It requires a lot of teamwork and effort on everyone's part. I don't think students realize how much blood, sweat, and tears go into the making of the Yearbook.”

However, most students who have been part of the making of an annual have agreed that all the hard work is worth it. Senior, and director of special projects for the yearbook staff, Christopher Poiry stated, “Choosing to become a member of the yearbook staff was one of the best choices of my high school career. I have learned an amazing amount of skills and responsibility through my work with the team. I recommend that anyone with an outgoing personality and a thirst to be involved join the yearbook staff.” Mrs. Stucken said that the most rewarding part of advising a year book staff is, “being a part of the making of such a historical piece."

Most will agree that being a part of the staff was a great decision because they were given the opportunity to create memories and have a say in what goes in the book. Senior, and Co-Editor of the Yearbook staff, Kirby Rodgers commented, “Being on the yearbook staff, and editor of the Yearbook has been a great privilege. I am very grateful that I have had this wonderful opportunity to work with a great advisor, and a great staff. Hopefully, next year, the Yearbook staff will be as good of a team as this year's." The current staff has quite a few seniors who will not be returning next year so, they encourage anyone with responsibility and creativity to get involved.

The 2001-2002 Yearbook is complete and has gone to publishing. It is only a short time left until they will be here and we will be viewing, signing, and enjoying them. If you haven't bought your Yearbook yet, the current price is $100 with ASB and $110 without. Next month, the price will go up and the Yearbook Staff recruiters will be accepting applications for the 2002-2003 staff. If you are interested, please see Mrs. Stucken.
