J TO THA L-O The Remixes

Jennifer Lopez's latest CD, J To Tha L-O! The Remixes, was released on February 5. It immediately became #1 on the Billboard 200 and the R&B/Hip-Hop charts. Although it has already become a commercial success, Jennifer Lopez shouldn't get all of the credit. Since this is just a remix album, the producers should get the credit. This CD involved many different producers. Ranging from Irv Gotti to Pablo Flores. J. Lo filled her album with many different styles of remixes.

Jennifer Lopez was born on July 24, 1970. She grew up in the Castle Hill section of the Bronx, New York. As a child, she took many dance classes. It paid off when she won a dance contest and became a Flygirl on FOX's "In Living Color" in 1990. This soon led to acting. She quickly landed parts in movies, such as Jack, Anaconda, Out of Sight, The Cell, and Angel Eyes. One of her most famous roles was when she played slain Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla in Selena, a biopic of the singer, in 1997. This was the film that introduced music into her career.

Jennifer Lopez's debut album was released in the spring of 1999. The title, On The 6, came from the name of the subway train that she rode into the city to go to dance classes, auditions, and clubs. With the release of the first single, "If You Had My Love," the album quickly became a success. The Darkchild Master Mix of that single appears on her latest release. Rodney Jerkins produced it, so it has more of a hip-hop feel to it. The second single, "Waiting For Tonight," also is on the remix CD. It was remixed by Hex Hector and has a faster dance beat than the original. Another single on the album is "Feelin' So Good." It originally featured Big Pun and Fat Joe. The remix features P. Diddy and G. Dep and was produced by Sean Combs. "Let's Get Loud" was also remixed for her new CD. Pablo Flores produced it and gave it a faster beat and Latin flavor. Those four tracks were the only ones off of her first album that were remixed for her newest CD.

Jennifer Lopez's sophomore album, J. Lo, was released in January of 2001. It just happened to come out the same week as her first romantic comedy, The Wedding Planner. Just as the CD landed at #1 on the Billboard chart, the movie became #1 at the box office. The success of this album was rooted in the hip-hop style of her new music. This was thanks to the help of her then boyfriend, Sean Combs, who produced a few of the tracks. One of the tracks he did was "Walking on Sunshine." It was remixed by Mark Taylor and Jeff Taylor as the Metro remix. The first single off of J. Lo was "Love Don't Cost A Thing," was more of a dance track than a hip-hop track. For her remix CD, it was redone as an old school hip-hop song featuring Fat Joe. The second single, "Play," was originally a dance track. When it was remixed, the beat was changed, but it remained a dance track.

When Jennifer Lopez released her third single, "I'm Real," the remix that soon followed the original's release, became one of her biggest hits ever. The "I'm Real (Murder Remix)" was produced by Irv Gotti and co-written by Ja Rule. The entire song had been rewritten. The original was more of a pop dance song and the remix was a slow hip-hop song. Although it wasn't released until late summer, the J. Lo and Ja Rule duet became one of the most played songs in 2001. When it came time to release another single, she called on Irv Gotti and Ja Rule again. "Ain't It Funny" was completely rewritten and turned into a hip-hop track. They added the new talent of Cadillac Tah this time around. Since it's recent release, it has already become very popular. Right now it is #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Both of the Murder remixes appear on J To Tha L-O!

There is also one new track on the remix album. "Enough" is the theme song to the latest movie she filmed. It is very different from the rest of the CD considering it is a ballad. I really enjoy this CD is because it is so up beat. Almost every song on it is possible to dance to. The best part about it is the variety of the different styles. As most of her albums do, there are songs with bits of hip-hop, disco, salsa, techno, and pop. I recommend this CD to anyone who has enjoyed her past CD's or the Murder Remixes that she has released.
