Editorial Now that 2002 is here, it's time for new year's resolutions and fresh starts. Ringing in the new year was actually a bigger deal this year than it ever was before. This is partially due to the events that took place last year on September 11. The terrorist attacks certainly caused a great impact on the United States, but there were many positive effects that resulted from it. Americans joined together to fight terrorism and worked hard to prevent discrimination against their fellow Americans. It was wonderful that we as a country learned so much from such a terrible event, but now, five months later, people are still trying to recuperate from what happened. This is completely understandable because it was truly a terrible loss for everyone affected, but the most positive and logical thing to do is move on. It doesn't make too much sense to dwell upon something so negative because it will only bring forth negative thoughts and ideas. What happened was in the past and we should try our best to start fresh this year. 2002 is a brand new year and in a way a brand new start for America. We have the chance to start over and try to get everything back to normal. Of course there will be some long-term effects and those will take a while to stabilize, but in the meantime, we can set our sights on other important issues. One thing that I absolutely can't stand to hear about is Osama bin Ladin. Sure he needs to be brought to justice, but that doesn't mean that we constantly need to hear about him. There are so many other important issues going on right now that we should focus on, not only in the country but all around the world. The broadcast media aren't really helping with all this because they like to repeat the same issues over and over again. There hasn't been a single time I have watched the news and the events of September 11 have not been brought up. This becomes extremely grueling and eventually people will choose not to watch the news because this issue has been so blown out of proportion. Instead of assuaging the situation, the media has chosen to exacerbate it. Let's look ahead instead of looking to past. The new year should bring many positive things for America, but in order to make that work, we must all stay positive. Let's not dwell in the past, it is essential that we move on and continue to unite. |
