  3. Meeting Agenda
    Principals Report

Filming of the show “Medium” took place on campus and we received approximately $10,000 for this. This money goes directly to Center Street School.

Students took place in a school-wide election in conjunction with the National Election Day of November 4th. We had many PTA volunteers and the day was a huge success.

Center Street participated in “The Great Shake Out” with a successful drill and evacuation. All grade levels participated at school and continued with great discussions at home.

Golf Lessons will be coming to Center Street School. Beginning in December students may sign for golf lessons along with the other extra-curricular activities offered at Center Street.

    Budget

As expected the picture is very grim. The City of El Segundo has offered to assist the school district in areas where funding is deficient. The city has proposed to pick-up the crossing guard responsibilities as well as giving sufficient funds enabling Center Street to reinstate the classroom assistants for 4th and 5th grade.

    Center Street Garden Update

Meetings have been held with the garden team and the city of El Segundo regarding composting. “Planet Pals”, a Manhattan Beach based organizations will work with students in regards to the school garden.

There will also be Family Events held early next year… “Chalk drawing event” in February and an “Obstacle Course” in the spring.

    Math Night

Will be held in January. We are looking for feedback from parents regarding changes to help increase attendance at this event and make it more successful.

  4. School Sites Visits

The District has been exploring ways to meet the needs of 21st Century learners. Mrs. Janicek and Ms. Van Breene visited Fisler, a Magnet school, which utilizes laptops, 1 to 1 ratio, for all students in grades 2 through 5. They are achieving great results! Just yesterday, a group of parents and staff from both Center Street and Richmond Street schools had the opportunity to participate in a site visit of Marquez School in Pacific Palisades. This school utilizes laptop carts in grades 1 through 5 on in a 2 to 1 ratio and the kindergarten classrooms have desktop computers. This is their 3rd year with this program. They began with 7 pilot teachers and spent a great deal of time dedicated to staff training. The next action item is for Mrs. Janicek to contact the Apple representative to arrange a visit to an upcoming School Site Council meeting; we may also invite Dr. Yantz to attend this meeting.

  5. Review of Budget
A print-out of the 2008-2009 Projected Allocations/Expenditures was distributed and they were briefly reviewed. Only change was the 2% under salaries, remaining amount to spend is approximately $20,000.
  6. Analysis of current education practices
    Reading Specialist Update

Kim Jones, Reading Specialist reviewed the Reading standards and practices at our school site. Houghton Mifflin curriculum is utilized which is state adopted, aligned to the standards, aligned to Edusoft and has components within to differentiate for sub groups. Kim advised that the Reading Specialists from both elementary school sites met to standardize the practices for the district-wide benchmarks. She reviewed with us what supplemental materials there are available for each grade level, what the assessments and benchmarks are for each grade as well as any interventions that are being utilized.
  7. Math

Mrs. Janicek reviewed our math program. Every Day is the curriculum currently being utilized. This is spiral curriculum, also state adopted, with components to differentiate, and the material is aligned to the standards. The district will consider adopting it again for next year. Mrs. Janicek also reviewed what supplemental materials there are available for grade levels, special needs and GATE students. In the area of assessments, Center Street and Richmond Street schools are working well together and aligned with Edusoft so scoring tests is simplified. Math intervention is offered and utilized at both school sites. Enrollment in math intervention is determined by acceptance of teacher recommendation.

  8. ELAC Issues and Review

Mrs. Alejandra Kaiser attended an ELL meeting at the District Office this morning and reported that there will be a meeting on December 11th for all parents of ELL students. Invitations will be mailed to the homes of these students after Thanksgiving break. ELL representatives from each school site will be at the meeting to explain what is being done in and out of the classroom to meet the needs of each student. Ms. Hoover suggested that the ELL aide communicate the importance of attendance at the upcoming parent/teacher conferences. Mrs. Jones advised that she already has her materials for Reading Night translated into Spanish.

  9. New Business

We have decided to hold a December meeting on Thursday, December 18th to review staff wish lists and develop a School Site Council wish list.

Meeting was adjourned at 4:06pm, Adam Guy made the motion to adjourn and Renee Hoover seconded.
